The 2016 Ferrari 458 was wrecked after crashing into a power pole at St Peter’s in Sydney's inner west, with the driver and his passenger trapped inside.

The driver and his passenger, who were believed to be in their 20s and 40s respectively, have been rescued and were rushed to St George Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

Both were reported to be in stable condition.

Witnesses said that the red supercar was racing away from traffic lights before one of its front tyres blew out, sending the luxury car spinning into a power pole.

The impact has left the $475,000 car looking like a twisted pile of metal with a smashed windscreen and a missing front wheel.

Beau Smith, who witnessed the car crash told 7News: 'I actually thought someone drove into the building down the bottom.'

'I've come out of the window to see the aftermath and thought, "Oh wow". It was just sideways and basically just hit the pole in the driver's side door.'

The catastrophic car crash caused all northbound and two lanes of southbound traffic on the Princes Highway to be diverted for an hour while salvage crew members worked to clear the scene.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Kay Armstrong said: 'Anytime we respond to an incident with patients trapped inside a motor vehicle, it's challenging.'

'High-powered vehicles can so easily get out of control.'

'I'd ask everyone on the road to please take care.'

The way this is written makes me wonder if the driver is the owner of the car

Serious doubts as to whether the 20 year old driver was the owner. Who has ever heard of a front tyre blowout when taking off from the lights, even though it was a speedy take-off. This car is a rear wheel drive. Maybe, just maybe, it lost the front wheel altogether. Possibly on a test drive after mechanical work, or tyre replacement and something wasn't secured correctly. Maybe!!!
