7 reasons why you’re better off with a sofa bed rather than a spare bed!

If you’re anything like me, making the bed is a workout. Getting the sheets out of the linen press, clearing around your bed to make sure nothing is in your way, painfully pulling that bottom sheet around every corner. My goodness, it’s no fun is it? What’s worse, is when you have a spare bed that sits there and gathers dust that the kids and grandkids might occasionally use, so you find yourself washing sheets and making beds far more than you’d like to. But what if you could still have all of the perks of a spare bed for the kids and grandkids, but less work?*

A sofa bed* is an excellent alternative to a traditional bed because they offer a unique combination of functionality, convenience, and style that caters specifically to the needs of someone who really only needs a spare bed a couple of times a month. By providing a dual-purpose piece of furniture that maximises space and adapts to accommodate guests, a sofa bed is an ideal choice for older Australians* looking to simplify their lives without compromising on comfort.

But you still have to make up the sofa bed when you have visitors, whereas a regular bed is always ready to go. I have both a regular spare bed and a sofa bed, and it’s the bed that gets far more use. It’s a pain in the neck having to make up the sofa bed when it’s needed. And then you have to store the pillows and doona somewhere. Your article is simply an advertising spiel.

It's a bit hard to swallow the normal price as being $3999.00. I just bought the amazing Koala comfy sofa for less than the supposed discount price of this one. No one would ever have to spend that kind of money and I agree that it probably is blatant advertising. I have to say that I feel like we as readers are being taken as fools. Disappointing!

Hello @Thecheesequeen @Debbie Melissa! It's totally fine that neither of you want the sofa, this isn't trying to trick you into buying anything you don't want or need which is why our every link has an asterisks next to it, because we always state in our newsletter and on our website that if anything is sponsored there will be asterisks next to it so we make it very clear and transparent we are being paid to run certain advertorials or ads in our newsletter. As both long time members, you will know we do these every now and then as a way to make a little money and keep our publication free for all our members :)

We are called the Seniors Discount Club and are here to help you save money, not spend it, which is why when Emma Sleep reached out and offered a discount, we said why not, for our members who do want a good quality sofa bed it's a pretty good deal! But of course, there's no pressure for anyone to buy anything - there never is!

I appreciate the feedback though, and let me know if you didn't know about the asterisks meaning sponsored? We have that in the footer of every newsletter so members know what is and isn't paid. We also have it in multiple different places across the forum! I think if it isn't clear enough, then maybe I'll start adding it to the bottom of every sponsored article as well? Because we really aren't trying to hide anything!

Thanks so much!
Maddie.

Another alternative is a daybed. My partner has a day bed from IKEA in one of his bedrooms, which can be used as a sofa when not in use, as a single bed and, by pulling out the extension, as a queen bed. He also has another guest room with a queen bed.

When we moved into a retirement village I decided I did not want to use the limited space of the second bedroom by installing a bed so I put in a sofa bed. Best decision I made. Some nights when I cannot sleep I will pop in there. Don't even bother to extend it right out. I just sleep on it as is. Plenty of room for me as I am a side sleeper. I use the room as another lounge as well as being my dressing room because like many ladies I have too many clothes ;)

My problem with the bed in particular is getting down and up off the floor. As much as I would like to free up some space in our spare rooms by getting sofa beds, the only people who visit are often older than we are. As both my husband and I have a problems getting up, once we are down this kind of sofa bed is of no use to us.

This is an English article according to the pricing with the cost including V.A.T I remember when they brought that in I thought at the time that VAT would only work in a German brothel i.e Von Atta Time?

Our sofa bed is much higher off the ground than that one

Thankyou for clarifying this fact to readers. The article, l thought, was handy information. An option we had never considered until now, certainly food for thought. Again, thankyou.

I, for one, took no offence to this article. The storage space is a good idea & the bed itself looks very chunky & l would expect, comfortable.

I used to always have a sofa lounge in my family room and I found it so handy.
I remember even my grandmother had one her couch that was in the loungeroom made into a bed but opened differently than the ones today .

This has given me food for thought what to do with a bedroom when one of my sons more out at the end of the year

This is a repeat of an article from May of this year. I stand by my original comments. It’s much more of a chore to make up a sofa bed than it is is to keep a bed made up. Certainly I do have a sofa bed which is used occasionally but when we have visitors it’s the regular spare bed that is used first. They are great if you have limited space.

It depends entirely on the occupants of a home/unit as to whether they have a bed made up all the time or just a sofa bed. For us we just have a sofa bed which is only used by myself as we no longer have guests stay over any more. Friends prefer to book into a motel/hotel and just come and visit and family go home after each visit as they only live 30 mins away.

We have a sofa bad in the lounge room and also use the beds in the two spare rooms for visitors. The sofa bed usually gets used on spec occasions when all the family are here together - which is not very often. I would love one like the Emma sofa but I’m not even considering it while we still have the cat, he’s almost wrecked the one we have with his scratching - good job I love him lol

I have two sofa beds in my Media room, they are very comfy and not low by the ground at all . They are over 30 yrs old and we bought them at the time when we used to get frequent overseas visitors and we bought them at the Woolstore in inner Brisbane , a very large furniture store , which has disappeared many years now and they have now highly priced kind of town houses built , which called noe Newstead , right on the Brisbane River .
I keep the sofa beds as they are so good , even with headrests and we sit there often in the afternoon winter sun having a cup of tea.
They have been moved now 5 times and I hope this will be the last house .:D(y).

When we designed our home, we decided to make the 3rd bedroom a game area for kids when they visit. We purchased a sofa bed that can stay made up and still be folded back if I want Nowhere near the prices mentioned here. It was very much within our budget.
The kids love it. They actually fight over who is going to pull the bar down. They like to bunch up on the bed and do what kids do. If they want to sit on the lounge, they can. It's a very nice and comfy 3 seater (adults). Little kids fit 4-5.
I was toying with the idea of a Murphy bed when we were making decisions, but it was way too expensive. Would have looked great, but not for us oldies.
If you want to have a space that can be used for something else, a sofa bed is a good solution. If you don't, then you won't need to buy one.

These serve a good purpose after a party when one of the guest is unable to drive home because they are over the limit.
Back in the day, I used to host Christmas for both sides of the family. We had lots of food, late night board games, water fights, yard soccer, and some people had too many tipples. They were full days and we would not let any drinkers drive home. So, if they had kids, they stayed too.
I ended up with bodies all over the floor of our little home (camping style). I could have done with a couple of sofa beds then. Had to make do with sponges and pillows on the floor, a 2 man tent in the back yard and kids tripling up with our two boys. Was crowded, but lots of fun and a great Boxing day breakfast the next morning. Those were the days.

My problem with the bed in particular is getting down and up off the floor. As much as I would like to free up some space in our spare rooms by getting sofa beds, the only people who visit are often older than we are. As both my husband and I have a problems getting up, once we are down this kind of sofa bed is of no use to us.
Exactly the point I wanted to make!
