5 things you need to know to live a healthy life, according to a health and fitness coach

We all know that leading a healthy lifestyle is important. But with work, family, and social obligations constantly pulling us in different directions, it can be hard to find the time (and energy) to exercise and eat right.

That's where Elle Nielsen, a health and fitness coach comes in.

And she's got the perfect advice for anyone looking to get in shape.

Vary your exercises

First, she reminds people that weight training is just as important as cardio.

‘You definitely DO NOT need to train in the gym every single day for hours on end,’ she said in an interview.

According to her, changing up your fitness routine to incorporate strength training and lessen cardio could be the key to changing your body composition.

Stop striving for perfection

Next, she said to ‘stop striving for perfection’.

Elle explained that striving to be perfect all the time is a recipe for failure.

‘Life happens, gym sessions will be missed and the right food won’t be available – the list goes on. But consistency will always win.’

She added that it’s better to be 80 per cent consistent all the time, instead of 100 per cent one week and falling off the wagon the next.

It can be an easy trap to fall into but even small steps like a smaller portion size at dinner or a brisk walk in the morning can go a long way.

Find your ‘why’

She encourages people to find their ‘why’.

She explains that your mindset can play a big part in your health and fitness journey – and we couldn’t agree more.

‘Honing in on your “why” will help you stay in a routine, even on the days where you can’t be bothered.’

Elle is also a big advocate of romanticising one’s life in whatever way feels best.

‘Take a moment to think how it would look and feel to live your healthiest and fittest life. Focus on feeling better, and everything will fall into place from there.’

Do you want to improve your health so you can hold a newborn grandchild? Perhaps you want the freedom that comes with increased walking stamina.

There is no right or wrong motivation – but you should find yours.

Find what feels good

She also wants people to find the right exercise that makes them feel good.

‘Choosing how you move and nourish your body will also play a huge part in creating a routine you can stick to.’

You’ll be more inclined to stick with your new lifestyle if you enjoy it. Exercise in ways that make you happy – maybe that’s joining a weekly walking group or a social tennis club.

You could also enjoy solitary and more mindful exercises such as yoga or tai chi.

Find a routine

Finally, Elle advises everyone to create a routine and stick with it.

Yes, we all know how that can be challenging. So Elle gave tips on how to stick with a routine:
  • Schedule your whole week ahead – including workouts, groceries, and rest days.
  • Prepare your outfit the night before (so you’ll have something to look forward to in the morning).
  • Join a gym class or community you feel comfortable in.
  • Find inspiration from people around you or online.
  • Catch up with friends! It’s always nice to be surrounded with people that love and support you.
  • Continue to work on yourself and build a strong mindset.
  • Cook double portions of your dinner so tomorrow’s lunch is sorted out – saves you time and effort!
Key Takeaways

  • Elle shares tips to live a healthy and balanced life.
  • Among those tips, she said to incorporate weight training into your fitness routine, stop striving for perfection, find what feels good and your purpose for improving your health. Finally, find a routine.
