The holiday season is all about hosting and making memories, but preparing your home for guests can feel overwhelming—especially when time is tight.
Whether you're ready for last-minute visitors or just want to freshen up before company arrives, these quick and effective cleaning tips will help you create a welcoming space in no time.
Former housekeeper Vanesa Amaro has your back with her quick and easy tips for a last-minute clean. Also known as social media’s queen of clean,’ she shared her cleaning checklist in a video aimed at prepping for Thanksgiving celebrations in the US. But trust us, this advice is just as handy for Christmas and any other time guests are popping over.
Amaro’s first tip? Go through your home and return any misplaced items to their rightful spots.
Next on the list: tackle the toilets.
‘It is one of the most important places in your house – this is where it really reflects if you are a clean person or a dirty person,’ she explained.
But don’t just add toilet cleaner and give the bowl a quick swish—Amaro recommends dusting the entire surface and cleaning those often-overlooked areas like the base.
The third priority is ensuring your floors are clean, so vacuum and mop where needed.
And for the fourth task, a simple move can banish any lingering kitchen odours.
‘If you can’t have a spotless kitchen because you’re going to be cooking all day then make sure to at least take out the trash and put a clean trash bag on,’ she suggested.
Amaro’s four-step guide isn’t too different from advice shared by MaidForYou director Delah Gomasi. He previously shared that if he had just 30 minutes to clean before guests arrived, he’d prioritise vacuuming the floors, tidying up clutter, taking out the rubbish, making the beds, fluffing the cushions, and neatly organising the toilet paper.
‘[I’d also do] a quick wipe down of benches and our bathroom countertops to make sure there was no toothpaste residue,’ he added.
For those who have a bit more leeway to clean, Gomasi suggests focusing on areas that people will notice the most. ‘I can tell when I walk into a room how dusty it is, usually from the amount of sneezing I’ll do as soon as I walk in,’ he shared.
He also pointed out that corners of the floor are often neglected because they’re hard to mop and vacuum, so they tend to collect dust. ‘Floor rugs can be filthy because they’re usually not moved to clean underneath, even though you can vacuum them that doesn’t get rid of the dust and dirt that is found underneath them, this is especially true for heavy floor rugs,’ he noted.
With these simple tips, you can have your home looking presentable and welcoming in no time. What’s your go-to cleaning hack for last-minute prep? Do you have any favourite shortcuts for getting ready for guests? Share your thoughts and cleaning wisdom in the comments below!
