“You can’t make this up!”: Woman’s disturbing experience in a hotel room grabs the internet’s attention

A woman's creepy hotel experience has made the rounds on social media after she shared that the room she booked at Airbnb (an accommodation rental platform, for those who don't know) looked directly into a restaurant.

Yes, you read that right, folks, the hotel guest claimed that a dining table was literally within arm's reach from her window.

Sharing the horrifying experience on TikTok, Desiree Baker said that she felt ecstatic after booking an affordable room overlooking views of the middle of Manhattan

However, as the TikTok user opened the blinds the following morning, she was shocked to find that the window in her room looked directly into the hotel's restaurant.

Desiree said in her video: “How is this legal? You literally can not make this up. I can open the window and touch their table.”

The guest claimed that the pictures shown on the hotel's AirBnB profile were that of a sunlit room with "nice" views of the city.

“The pictures that I saw when I booked it looked nice. It was more than what I needed, I just needed a bed to sleep in... It’s in a good location, it’s perfect. I thought this is a great place to stay,” she said.

“When we got here it was midnight, it was dark and we just went to bed."

“When we woke up, there were blackout shades so you can’t see anything. I was so excited to open up the window to see the view. I thought I was going to see a building, a skyline or whatever."

“I roll up the shades... and we are in a restaurant. We are fully in a restaurant. I can open up this window and fully join these people at their dinner... at their lunch.”

The disturbing video showed the hotel guest opening up her shades to reveal a couple dining right in front of her.

Follow up footage revealed that Desiree went inside the restaurant to see what the window actually looked like from the other side To her surprise and disgust, she found it was being disguised as a mirror showing no more than the diner's own reflections..

Desiree decided to contact the host to ask for a refund due to the fact that the room she booked was "completely inaccurate".

But the host turned down the request, saying: “Apologies for taking some time to reply to you, actually we were going to cancel your reservation as we had some room issues, however, we were able to manage to host you."

“I believe everything went and is going well during your stay and glad to know that we were able to host you during this time of year.”

Desiree's TikTok videos — which collectively amassed more than 10 million views — caught the attention of the company, with an Airbnb representative reaching out to her.

“Needless to say it definitely shocked us and it’s not the experience that we want our guests to have,” the Airbnb representative wrote to Desiree.

“We will definitely be following up with your host here, but we just wanted to make sure you were taken care of."

“It looks like your check-out date was December 20 so I imagine there’s nothing we can do to sort your current reservation but I would be happy to offer you a coupon on a future Airbnb stay or perhaps discount part of your original stay as a cash refund.”

Whilst the photos in the booking were misleading she does say that all they were looking for was a bed for the night and they definitely got that. Hopefully she got a good nights sleep.

This is not in Australia, l mean what else could you expect. We really do live in the lucky country here in Australia. We have regulations & standards for a reason. This is why we should look very seriously at booking platforms that we use. Stop feathering the nests of other countries / people when booking accommodation anywhere. Deal directly with the owners / management of the accomm so that that business gets all the money. Having said all that, there are still shonky businesses here, just do your homework.
