Even the most well-known faces can find themselves in unexpected situations, especially when recognition isn’t guaranteed.
What seemed like an ordinary evening at a popular restaurant took an awkward turn when a misunderstanding led to an unusual encounter involving one of the world's most recognisable figures.
What happened next left staff scrambling and turned into a moment few could have predicted.
A Danish celebrity chef has revealed the moment his restaurant unknowingly turned away Denmark’s Australian-born Queen Mary.
Dak Wichangoen, former head chef at the Michelin-starred Kiin Kiin, revealed that the Danish royals were frequent guests at the restaurant.
The establishment is located just ten minutes from Amalienborg Palace.
Speaking to the media, Dak recalled: ‘I cooked for Mary and Frederik when I worked at Kiin Kiin. She loved a good Pad Thai. They love coming there.’
Despite the royal family’s regular visits, Mary was once denied a table after stopping by the restaurant’s takeaway section.
‘We had foreign staff in the kitchen and at the door, and they might not have known who Mary was,’ Dak explained.
‘Then (Mary) came in and said, "Hey, they said they didn’t have any space?" I said, "Who said there wasn’t any space? You just sit down."’
The Queen, originally from Hobart, Tasmania, is known for her down-to-earth nature and is often spotted cycling around Copenhagen unescorted.
It follows reports that Mary went completely unnoticed during a visit to Sydney in October last year.
Travelling with her daughter, Princess Josephine, 14, the Queen was accompanied by her longtime friend Amber Petty, who served as a bridesmaid at her 2004 wedding.
The group embarked on Sydney’s iconic Bondi to Bronte coastal walk and explored the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition.
Dressed in an all-black outfit, a navy blue cap, and sunglasses, Mary attempted to stay under the radar.
Matrix Media CEO Ben McDonald, who captured photos of the Queen, shared that she managed to blend in effortlessly.
‘She even walked all along Mackenzies Bay with her daughter and went unnoticed,’ he said. ‘She passed a lot of people and no one noticed! They had no idea a Queen was in their midst.’
He added that Mary even stopped to shop at a boutique in Paddington without drawing any attention.
In a previous story, Queen Mary once again proved how effortlessly she can blend in with the crowd.
During a recent holiday break, she went completely unnoticed—further proof that even royalty can go incognito.
