‘Up to $6000?’: Money expert goes viral after revealing some coins from your loose change could be WORTH A FORTUNE

Many Australians are using 'tap-and-go' payments as their preferred payment method for their daily transactions since digitalisation rapidly took place to reduce physical contact during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this has not stopped Aussies from withdrawing banknotes as previously reported.

If you are still using physical cash for your day-to-day transactions, then you might want to check your change as some Aussie coins could make you a little bit richer according to a money expert.

TikTok user Joel Kandiah, who posts under the pseudonym TheHistoryOfMoney, has recently gone viral after he shared a video of the rarest and most valuable coins that could be hiding in your loose change.

According to the money expert, the coins — $2, $1, 20c and 5c pieces — could be worth a fortune, as much as $6000 per piece.

The video began with Joel telling his viewers to "always check your change", emphasising that “you could find some of Australia’s rarest coins”.

The money expert then showed the various little-known features that could potentially make your coin worth a fortune.

“Take a note of these dates and go hunting,” Joel remarked.

So, what exactly should you look for in your loose change to see if you can exchange them for thousands of dollars?

1. $1 coin ‘Mule Error’

In 2000, a number of Australian $1 coins were accidentally printed with a 10c head die — making them have a thicker rim on the head side.

The money expert said that the error has made these coins — also known as 'Mule Dollars' — become more valuable.

Joel said: “Worth between $200 and $4000 depending on condition."

2. ‘Wavy’ 20c coin from 1966

The money expert said that the "wavy baseline on the '2'" made these 20c coins rare, noting that the "line is usually flat".

According to Joel, a 20c piece with a wavy line could be "worth up to $2000".

3. The 2007 ‘Double Headed’ 5c

A number of 5c coins were printed with images of Queen Elizabeth II's head on both sides in 2007.

The money expert noted that this was “an extremely rare error that slipped past the inspection process", claiming that the value of these coins could be as much as $3500 in uncirculated condition.

4. 2020’s “Firefight” $2 coin

A number of Coloured Coin-in-Cards were circulated by the Royal Australian Mint to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Australia's firefighters during the devastating bushfires of 2019-2020 in 2020.

However, the colour 'flame' was printed on the wrong side of some coins, making these coins more valuable than others.

Joel said: “Colours minted on the ‘heads’ side (have) been selling on eBay for up to $6000!”
