‘Train surfers’ draw flak for risky stunt: 'Stupidity of the highest order'

Adventure is one thing, but risking one's life for a fleeting moment of adrenaline? Some might say that's downright foolishness.
The latest shocking moment comes all the way from Melbourne, where two hooded figures decided to hitch a ride on the back of a moving train.
Probably oblivious to the grave danger buzzing just centimetres above their heads, the duo was caught in their thrill-seeking venture on camera, not minding as a high-powered electric line lay within their reach.
A disturbing spectacle for anyone watching, the brazen stunt was labelled as 'stupidity of the highest order' by Metro Trains.
‘Melbourne's rail network is not a playground, and those who treat it like one are only putting themselves at risk of serious injury or death,’ aMetro Trains spokesperson said.
‘Train surfing and coupler riding is the stupidity of the highest order—and no stunt, thrill, or social media post is worth a life,’ they continued.
‘Beyond the obvious risk to life, these incidents can stop train services in their tracks and cause significant and unnecessary disruption to passengers,’ the spokesperson added, highlighting that not only it would risk the surfers’ lives, but could also cause significant delays on commuters.
Not only it is illegal, the ‘subway surfers’ can be fined more than $400 for the stunt they pulled.
As of writing, the duo's identities are yet to be determined.
Social media users have condemned the act, with one writing: ‘All fun and games till they fall. Maybe that's the only way they will learn.’
‘So dangerous,’ another person remarked.
A third person stated: ‘Unbelievable they got nothing else to do.’
Metro Trains' security team, in collaboration with Victoria Police, are on the case to thoroughly investigate incidents involving train surfing, coupler riding, and trespassing.
Earlier this year, authorities in New South Wales initiated a crackdown on similar hazardous behaviour.
These 'extremely dangerous and stupid' acts saw a 13 per cent increase since 2021.
Understandably, school holidays often show a spike in these frightening figures.
Tragically, rail corridors' illegal trespassing has led to eleven lives lost in the past five years—a harrowing testament to the deadly repercussions of this senseless tomfoolery.
