‘This missed the mark’: Labor apologises after controversial post

Political messaging can be a powerful tool, but when it misses the mark, the backlash can be swift.

A recent social media post from a major political party sparked controversy, drawing unexpected comparisons and strong reactions online.

What unfolded next led to a quick reversal and a public apology.

A Labor Party social media post was taken down after users pointed out its resemblance to a white nationalist slogan.

The post, which appeared on the party’s official social media pages, featured a man wearing a T-shirt with an Australian flag superimposed on a map of the country.

Above the image, bold text read: ‘This is Australia.’

The slogan beneath it stated: ‘We eat meat, We drink beer, And we love Medicare.’

The accompanying caption called on ‘Aussie patriots’ to defend Medicare.

However, social media users quickly noticed similarities between the T-shirt in the post and a piece of racist memorabilia archived by Museums Victoria.

The archived shirt, sold in 2009, featured a nearly identical design but included the words: ‘This is Australia. We eat meat, we drink beer and we speak f****** English.’

Museums Victoria described the original shirt as targeting Muslims due to dietary restrictions around alcohol and non-halal meat.

‘The slogans on these t-shirts are racist and seek to define Australian identity by excluding "the other" and by excluding anyone who dares to voice criticism,’ the museum’s website stated.

It also noted that phrases like ‘If You Don’t Love It, Leave!’ and ‘Support it or F*** Off’ were often associated with this kind of messaging.

Criticism of the Labor Party’s post spread quickly, with some accusing the party of repurposing a far-right slogan.

‘Have you been hacked by the far right,’ one person commented before the post was deleted.

‘How cringe-worthy. It’s incredible that someone thought repurposing a racist meme was a good idea,’ another wrote.

A different user called out the social media team for ‘toxic, patriotic masculinity.’

Facing mounting backlash, the party removed the post and issued an apology.

‘Labor is seeking to reach everyone with our message that Australians value Medicare and we’ll do everything we can to protect it from Peter Dutton’s cuts,’ a spokesperson said.

‘However, the party acknowledges this post missed the mark and it has been deleted.’

In a previous story, we explored how new legislation could see Australians fined up to $55,000 for racist remarks.

With debates over national identity and inclusivity continuing to make headlines, the conversation around harmful rhetoric is more relevant than ever.

This slogan does not represent the views of all Australians, maybe some, but is not helpfull if we want cohesion in this country, it could be viewed as a right winged conservative view. However, I don`t drink beer or alcohol for that matter and very rarely eat meat, but love medicare. It does not hit the mark with me! I don`t think this particular T-shirt is racist, my first impression is that it`s stupid!

I always say if anyone that migrates from another country if they do any criminal activity or they do not want to be nice people i reconciliation that when coming to Australia the Burke's should be removed and uncover there face's because if Australia's have to go into banks etc bike riding helmet have to be removed and so should foodies.
So I say if you don't like Australia then leave. 🇦🇺

I think the slogan is BRILLIANT - very Australian and should be so.
As for meat "offending" Muslims - what a load of BullSH*T!!!!
The Jewish community have Kosher meat and I can assure you, not one of them would even give it a thought.
If anything, you might think vegans would find it offensive... but, no mention of that!
Why is it always the Muslim community that are SO protected because they MAY be offended? They, themselves create the self-pity crap of Islamophobia.
It's the non-Muslims that should be protected from Muslim radicals - who don't give a sh*t about what offends us!!!

Why do we Aussies have to bow and scrape to those that might find it offensive. They chose to come here to live, it's them that need to change their ways in order to fit in. Learn to speak English, leave their cultural habits in their old country, or keep it behind closed doors, but we certainly shouldn't be giving our ways to appease those that would see us give in to their every whim.

Definitely not an honest mistake.. typical lowlife Labor.. dirty politics 🤬

How is that slogan racist? Its just a slogan and what has it got to do with Muslims. You actually sound like a radical yourself. And it is clear to me that you are being racist.

If only this attitude had been considered before this country was invaded by the Poms.

I have a black T shirt with SAVE AUSTRALIA,big map of AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 and ban ISLAM on it every time I wear it get the thumbs up 👍 . This is our country so they can bugger off and take their s***t with them. They need to speak English, dress as we do and obey our LAWS .
Yes, obviously you don`t know Australian history, two standards O.K for us who have been blowins at some point in time. Are you forgetting that this country was inhabited with another race before colonisation? English, Our Laws, give me a break!

Too bad this didn`t happen for the Aboriginals when the Poms colonised this country.
