‘They should pick on someone their own size’: Owner stands strong after 1972 Fiat 500 was vandalised

A quiet early morning in London took an unexpected turn when a cherished classic car became the target of a reckless act.

What seemed like an ordinary moment quickly unfolded into a shocking scene captured on camera.

The aftermath has left the owner devastated and sparked a wave of outrage online.

A peaceful early morning in London was shattered when a beloved classic car became the target of a reckless and destructive act. The owner’s ‘pride and joy’—a pristine 1972 Fiat 500 painted a vibrant orange—was left on its side after two men approached the vehicle just after 4:00 am on Friday, 2 May.

Captured on camera, the footage shows the pair stumbling towards the tiny vintage car. One of the men tries the door but finds it locked. Instead of walking away, he signals to his companion to help lift the vehicle.

The vandals then begin to hoist the small Fiat at a 45-degree angle, struggling with its weight as it shifts and ultimately tumbles onto the bitumen. After the crash, the men quickly flee the scene, leaving the damaged car rocking in the middle of the narrow street.

The heartbroken owner discovered the aftermath later that morning while stepping outside for an early walk with his dog. Speaking to the press, he said: ‘I was blissfully unaware of anything untoward until I opened my front door to take my dog out for his early morning walk.’

Instead of the familiar sight of his vintage car, he came face-to-face with the chassis: ‘I was totally shocked, it was a totally surreal experience.’

Despite the car’s small size, it was blocking traffic on the narrow street until nearby builders arrived to help lift it back onto its wheels. The owner feared the worst as the vehicle was turned upright, concerned it might have suffered serious damage.

Fortunately, no glass was broken. The only visible damage was a broken door handle, alongside some dents and scratches. However, oil leaked from the motor, pooling beneath the car.

The devastated owner vented his frustration, saying: ‘I just couldn’t understand how anyone would want to vandalise such a sweet little car.’ He added: ‘I still feel very emotional, it’s my pride and joy.’

Known for its character, the vintage Fiat often attracted attention from passersby who would stop to take photos. He shared: ‘People often stop to take photos my little characterful car, [but] no one has ever hurt it.’

In response to the vandals, the owner expressed his disdain, saying: ‘They should pick on someone their own size.’

The footage shared on social media labelled the culprits as ‘two drunk idiots’, sparking sympathy and outrage from viewers.

Comments included: ‘What was the point of that? What did they gain from doing that except shame?’ and ‘Running away from something you did proves you are ashamed of what you did.’

Others echoed the owner’s sentiments, with one user writing: ‘Absolutely gutted for you, man,’ while another hoped the damage wasn’t severe. A third called for justice: ‘Hope they will be found to pay for the damage,’ and a fourth remarked: ‘That’s despicable – that’s someone’s pride and joy.’

The vandals’ behaviour drew harsh criticism, with one commenter branding it ‘disgusting’ and questioning: ‘What’s wrong with people?’

The destruction of cherished vehicles is sadly not uncommon, with acts of vandalism continuing to shock communities.
