‘No way. Oh my god.’: Watch what this robot did at a local Kmart!

Shoppers at one Kmart store were left speechless after a routine pick-up turned into something out of a sci-fi film.

A Queensland woman watched in awe as a robot zipped out her Click & Collect order from the store’s warehouse—no staff needed.

The entire interaction took less than a minute… but left a lasting impression.

Samantha Bailey had simply turned up at her local Kmart at Westfield Mount Gravatt to collect an item she had ordered online.

Instead of heading to the traditional Click & Collect counter, she was directed to a self-serve kiosk.

After entering her order number, a message popped up on the screen: ‘Your order is arriving soon. Prepare to pick up your order. Your order will arrive shortly in a tray to the right.’

Seconds later, an animation appeared showing a robot transferring the item from the shelf to the collection point.

Within 30 seconds, her purchase arrived—delivered neatly in a tray beside the kiosk.

A Kmart employee nearby explained: ‘It’s a new thing...They’re just experimenting with our store.’

‘(The order) will come out on your right hand side about 20 to 30 seconds.’

Samantha filmed the entire process, stunned by the futuristic setup and how seamless it felt.

As the tray opened to reveal her order, she gasped: ‘No way. Oh my god.’

Curious, she peered through the window above the collection area and saw a tiny robot at work, moving her item behind the scenes.

‘This was so cool,’ she said.

She later explained that the feature only worked if customers placed an online order first and waited for confirmation before visiting the store.

‘The whole thing (in store) took probably a few minutes total,’ she said.

Her video has since gone viral, racking up over 240,000 views on social media.

Viewers were quick to share their amazement.

‘OMG this is amazing,’ one said.

‘If this comes to our local I’m gonna Click & Collect everything,’ another joked.

‘This is so cool. As an introvert, this would make life so much easier,’ one comment read.

‘Best thing ever,’ another added.

Kmart has been trialling the automated Click & Collect system at select locations across Australia since late 2023.

It remains unclear how many stores currently offer the feature, but a national rollout is expected if the trials continue to prove successful.

Kmart has been contacted for comment.

Will my home care provider give me a robot in the future to take me shopping . If I get the same one every week would be lovely . Hope they are trained to take a blind person shopping like me . i get a different person each week and I take them shopping instead of the other way around . No idea I will definitely test one out if they need volunteer

If the store hired staff to only man click and collect items when it was introduced then I suppose the new feature may cause some unemployment. If, however, the store just added extra duties on to their staff I can’t see why they would fire staff because that would leave a shortage of staff to carry out their regular duties. Staff may even appreciate the slight reduction of the many things they are required to do on a daily basis.
Whether you like it or not automation is here to stay. Has been in one form or another for centuries.

Dear member Inot54, thankyou for your post. I can imagine the younger generation would be over the moon with this convenient way of shopping, and not be bothered if employment was to be affected by any automation that is now part of our lives. I believe that it is the older generation, who have always worked hard without the intervention of modern technology, who are forseeing the way unemployment is on the rise because of the influences of the all mighty AI. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant day. God bless, 🙏🦋

I'd like to know how the thing knows it is giving the parcel to the right person. I can see a snatch and grab situation happening here. o_O
Dear member Clancieblue, thankyou for your post. Perhaps the customer has to press an order code into the machine, before they get their parcel. I might get my daughter to try it out, to find out just how convenient, and accurate, this this new method of shopping actually is. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant day. God bless, 🙏🦋

What I want to know is who is monitoring people lurking around, it seems a bit isolated.
