‘Last male sanctuary’ barber shop to pursue formalising ban on women

Robbie’s Chop Shop is working hard to become ‘the last male sanctuary’ in Adelaide after a complaint was made to Equal Opportunity South Australia (SA) about it requesting women observe that it is a male-only business.

The team behind the barber shop has decided to apply for an exemption to the Equal Opportunity Act. According to them, not only does Robbie’s Chop Shop provide haircuts and shaves, but it also provides a 'safe space for men to come together and discuss their issues'.

'Robbie’s Chop Shop does not believe that it is in breach of the Act, and sees the application as an opportunity to preserve its purpose and to be proactive in responding to the complaint and other complaints of a similar nature that have arisen in the past,' the store explained in a printed letter to its customers.

Although the barbershop recognises its stance has sparked much debate, they remain committed to their cause. Thousands of people have flocked to their social media page to declare their solidarity and support for Robbie’s.

'I love that this exists and love the safe space you’ve created for men to unload their weights of the world without being judged and [the] freedom to speak up in a space with others that may be facing similar issues,' wrote one woman.

‘As the mum of a son, if my son's outlet was an all-male barber I would be thrilled.’

However, some have understandably taken issue with the barber shop’s stance.

‘The topic of marketing your business to male clients and being a male-focused barber is VERY different to intentionally excluding and banning women,’ one user commented on their social media post.

Another critic wrote: I hope you would welcome trans men, non-binary people and folks of any gender wanting a masculine haircut. We all deserve to feel included and safe to approach businesses knowing we won’t be turned away based on personal attributes we can’t change.'

Why not. Forget the rubbish. When in doubt. Look "downstairs". If a certain gender wants to go a gender specific place. Good. Guess what, each gender has specific needs. Simple really. I've been refused service over the years because I'm male. But, I feel most seniors are on board with gender based services. It's the young that misconstrue the intent of these types of businesses.

Are we next going to allow MEN INTO WOMEN'S TOILETS & WOMEN INTO MEN'S TOILETS because we are being told these days that we must not discriminate? GET REAL.

Let the man make his choice of clients (he can even refuse any man creating a ruckus in his shop) and no one can tell him he has to allow that person in.

I gave up on women who see mysogeny in everything to do with men years ago. Everyone deserves to have their own space, do men need it less than women no they do not, being able to talk to other men without the fear of offending some female who may be present is their right just as it is a womans right to speak without causing a backlash from a male. If this barber shop was anywhere near us I would be encouraging the man in my life to attend.

For heaven's sake, it is their business and they should be allowed to do as they please.
There are literally thousands of barber shops and hairdressers. To the people who like to make a.carry on about these things, get over yourself and get a life
If this is such a big drama in your life, you really have big problems.
The sisterhood strikes again.. wombats all!

I am glad I am the age I am and was lucky enough to grow up in a reasonably sane world, withstanding wars etc which we humans never seem to learn anything from.
But this current age of lunatics, considering themselves binary, nonbinary, them or whatever rubbish they dream up is beyond crazy.Telling children in school they can choose what sex they are, or how even worse still parents filling their heads with such nonsense. This is a subject for those such unfortunate people who find themselves in this situation, not the general public.
Day by day we get as crazy as America.
Not only parents but also teachers

have my support.

Good on them for making a stand on something they feel so passionate about. I personally feel that they are on the right track but not if they let trans people into the mix. They made the choice to champion 'safety' for men so allowing trans people into the mix is going one step too far. IMHO

Let this MAN run his business the way he wants. I would get a bad look if I went into a female hairdresser shop for a short back and sides and started to let loose with a few of those words. Also, a few years ago men in the town I lived in decided to start a men's workshop. We were going well until someone decided that the women should combine their workshop with ours in the building we were in. BAD decision, they were getting dust all over their clothes and other items and we told them this prior to them moving in. We, the men gave up as the women controlled the committee after a short time.

Rent a mob doing their civic duty complaining about a single barber shop for men - how very predictable.

These whingers need to get a life. It is ONE barber shop in a city of probably hundreds that has declared it will only cut men's hair. If you are not a man, don't go there - simple!

As for those of unknown gender, don't discuss publically who you sleep with or what's in your pants and no one will know.

Remember the women's gym with the slogan "No Toms, no Harrys and definitely no dicks"? Could that outlook be regarded as sexist or misandrist, or what?

Be interesting to see if only male barbers work there. Most barber shops have more women than men working in them nowadays. On saying that the town I live in had a new barber shop open in our shopping mall a couple of years ago and to date I haven’t seen any women cutting hair there, although women are allowed inside to wait for their partners or kids.

Unfortunately, letting genders into different gender toilets is already appening. Because it's how they choose to identify on the day. Authorities, have their heads in the sand.
