Food delivery services have become an essential part of modern life, offering convenience at the tap of a button.
But what happens when the trust between customers and drivers is shattered by an unsettling incident?
A recent event in Sydney has left residents outraged, sparking questions about hygiene, accountability, and the standards upheld by major delivery platforms.
Residents of a Sydney apartment complex have been left outraged after a food delivery driver was allegedly caught on CCTV urinating inside a lift while holding a meal meant for a customer.
The incident reportedly took place on 10 March in an apartment building in Artarmon, located on Sydney’s North Shore.
Footage obtained by 2GB appeared to show the driver entering the lift with a bag from Betty’s Burgers before turning towards a corner.
The man, whose back was facing the camera, then seemed to adjust his pants before a wet patch became visible on the carpet after he exited.
Radio host Ben Fordham described the footage on 2GB, saying: ‘There’s just no mistaking it.’
‘All of the elevator floor is dry then he starts fiddling with the front of his pants and then he’s pressing the buttons in the lift. And he seems to be obsessed with this corner of the lift. We know why, because he’s taking a pee.’
‘He’s standing there for I don’t know, 10 to 15 seconds as the elevator is going up…then he does something to adjust the front of his pants and he steps outside, leaving behind the wet patch.’
Fordham also pointed out that in the footage, the driver was seen ‘holding the food in his right hand and his willy in his left hand.’
Residents were appalled, with Geoffrey Grasso, the building’s secretary, expressing his disgust over the situation.
‘It’s just revolting,’ he told 2GB, adding that other residents were equally disturbed by what had happened.
‘It raises a whole bunch of questions about their food handling training of their drivers at the very, very least. But the one thing that literally disgusts me is the fact that he is holding those people’s food while he is urinating and then delivers it to them.’
Grasso said he believed ‘all the evidence that we have’ indicated that the driver worked for Uber Eats.
Although the lift had been cleaned, he claimed the smell lingered and that repairs would be costly.
‘We may well need to change the carpet…it’s going to mount up. The building manager estimates no less than $2,000 just for that,’ he said.
‘It’s just a disgusting thing to do, it breaches any form of normal etiquette and health standards. I’m sure if he was that desperate and said to the resident in question “may I use your toilet”, I’m sure they would have said yes.’
Uber Eats responded to the controversy in a statement, saying they were investigating the matter.
‘We strongly condemn this kind of behaviour, which has no place on the Uber platform,’ a spokesperson said.
‘We are currently investigating and will be taking necessary action. Our community guidelines clearly set out the rules that we expect all users including delivery people to follow, and breach of these guidelines can result in loss of access to the Uber app.’
NSW Police confirmed an investigation had been launched and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Footage of the incident has sparked outrage, leaving many questioning the hygiene and professionalism of food delivery services.
