‘I got this in my letterbox’: What's behind the eerie note delivered to residents?

In a world where information travels faster than the speed of light, it's not uncommon for a piece of paper to cause a stir.

But when that piece of paper is a cryptic note urging people to stay home on a specific date, it's bound to raise more than a few eyebrows.

This was the case in Western Sydney last week when residents found an unsettling message in their letterboxes, prompting a wave of concern and confusion.

The note, stark in its brevity, read: 'Warning, 8th Nov 24. Stay out of the Sydney CBD. Stay safe, stay home.'

Such a message, devoid of context or explanation, was met with alarm. Community groups buzzed with speculation, and social media became a hotbed of theories and fears.

'I got this in my letterbox. Has anyone else? Does anyone know what it's about,' a worried mother posted, echoing the sentiments of many.

'I don't know where it came from, but I will be staying at home with my kiddies regardless and thought I would share with my fellow mums because whatever this is, we need to protect our babies.'

The ensuing panic forced NSW Police to step in, urging the public to disregard the note.

'There is no credible information to substantiate these claims, and the information has been assessed as baseless and without merit,' they stated.

But where did this note originate, and what was its motive?

It has been uncovered that the note was written by conspiracy theorists Annette Calarco and Doris Duriye Osman.

These two individuals spread doomsday warnings to their followers, predicting a major catastrophe on November 8.

Their claims were extreme, suggesting that a disaster ‘may involve nuclear explosives’ could trigger a tsunami along the east coast of NSW.

Their followers, caught in fear, discussed emergency preparations and plans to evacuate to the Blue Mountains.

Osman even advised parents to keep their children out of school on the fateful day.

When the day passed without incident, Calarco backpedalled, claiming that the disaster had been averted thanks to the awareness they had raised.

However, this did little to mitigate the backlash they faced for inciting unwarranted panic.

Calarco, known for her social media presence in the realm of stray cat rehoming, and Osman, a naturopath who sells health products online, found themselves at the centre of a storm of criticism.

'Now we're being crucified by people who've come out of nowhere; they haven't looked at anything, and they've jumped on the hating bandwagon,' Calarco lamented on her social media.

'We're not apologising guys, we're not doing that. I absolutely know that you guys are completely uninformed—you want to shoot the messenger.'

Members, always double-check your letterboxes, as they may become a frontline in the battle against fraud.

In a previous story, a woman received a wrapped object in her letterbox with a note claiming that it was from NSW Health, creating suspicion of its authenticity.

But what’s the object in question? Find out about the suspicious object here.
Key Takeaways
  • A false conspiracy theory contained in a note hand-delivered to Sydney homes caused panic among residents, urging them to stay home on November 8 due to an alleged disaster.
  • The note claimed a major catastrophe might occur, falsely mentioning the potential use of nuclear explosives and a resulting tsunami on the NSW east coast.
  • Conspiracy theorists Annette Calarco and Doris Duriye Osman were behind the note, spreading the misinformation through their social media channels and prompting followers to take drastic measures such as keeping children home from school.
  • NSW Police reassured the public that there was no credible information to support the claims made in the note, and the origins of the note led to a backlash against Calarco and Osman for inciting unnecessary fear.

They should be locked up for creating a public nuisance, conspiricy theorists make me sick, and that's considering I used to be one, then I grew up and realised what a crock of s*** they are..
And don't get me started on the flat earth society, I just show them this picture..
If the earth was flat cats would have pushed everything over the edge by now 😹

Another lurk is a friend ours was a plumber (now retired). His wife received a phone call to say he had fallen, was injured and been taken to........Hospital. She knew he was digging a small trench that day. As their children were at school she left a note on the floor - she knew they would find it as soon as they got home that way as the eldest one had a key. Her husband went home early and found the note so he called the hospital and the Police. It was many years ago before the introduction of mobile phones. The Police warned them that somebody may have been planning to break into their house or just a hoax as his van had his name and phone number on it.
What did the note say and why did he call the police?

The same message from the note was posted on Facebook. I have no idea who is responsible for this horrible & destructive fear mongering but, I hope the law catches up with them as so many people were frightened unnecessarily 😞
It was in the main message about who was responsible, but no news about whether they were punished or not.

Have you caught up with the latest thought bubble from the nanny state mob? Now, they're going to insist that the health warnings currently printed on each pack of ciggies will have to be put on every cigarette in the pack, which will undoubtedly lead to a boom in illegally imported unbranded roll-your-own papers and chop-chop tobacco. Failing that, the government will insist that the health warnings be printed on each strand of tobacco in the pouch in fluorescent paint. It'll just take a bit of time, that's all.
My partner smokes and he buys his from the local tobacconist, 100 smokes in a box for $40 and they taste the same as normal smokes!

Yes, 2012 was another example of a false prediction, based on interpretations of the Mayan calendar. That was an expensive experience for many!
And the Y2K bug that never happened, even planes got grounded in case their computers stopped working.
I sat on the computer waiting, then waiting some more, then I thought it might be on American time, they are behind us in time so I waited again, and nothing happened...Ever 😂

Don’t liket. Don’t buy them. Saves us all having to pay for your bed in hospital. Too many friends and relatives are living terrible lives with king cancer and emphysemia

Illegal product where they don’t pay taxes. Four tobacconists here have been firebombed by criminal gangs trying to get the territory

My partner has seen a police car pull up with the guy in civvies and go and buy some.
He parked well away from the door but he came out of that car!

Will you be happy for tobacco to be completely banned?
Wouldn't worry me in the slightest. If the idiots who let themselves get hooked on tobacco (in spite of a couple of warnings that it might, just might, be a teensy-weensy bit harmful to their health -- as well as that of people in their vicinity -- are happy forking out a big part of their money to blow pretty little designs in the air and finish up smelling like the floor of a pub bar, well, let 'em. Doesn't make me no never mind.

Something similar happened in Adelaide in the 70s, someone predicted a tsunami along the coast, in the end the Premier of the day went down to the Glenelg Jetty to supposedly hold the waters back!
No not to hold back the "waters".
Don Dunstan went to the jetty to show people that it was just fear mongering, and there was no danger at all to the public.
That was broardcast on all channels at news hour.
I remember it well thinking that so many idiots believed some clown who sprouted
this VERBAL DIARRHEA.:poop::poop:

More “nuttas” trying to influence people with their wacky ideas. Why don’t they put their time to good use and help people in need, instead of thinking up conspiracy theories.
