Controversial opinions often spark heated debates, especially when they touch on legal and societal changes.
One man's outspoken stance on a key legal issue has ignited a wave of online backlash, drawing sharp criticism and disbelief from many.
What followed was an intense exchange that quickly spiralled into a viral spectacle.
A man who claimed he left Australia because of the country’s sexual consent laws faced a fierce backlash after an emotional online rant.
Stephen Irving, an Australian expat living in Thailand, said he moved overseas due to what he described as ‘unfair’ laws that he believed were ‘dangerous’ for men.
He said: ‘I haven’t been in the same room as a Western girl in two years. Once they (introduced) enthusiastic consent I left Australia and I don’t want to come back,’ he said in one of his many videos.’
‘I would not recommend being in the same room, even with a family member after enthusiastic consent, not without being very, very careful because they have all legal rules against you.’
His social media profiles indicated he relocated to Chon Buri, Thailand, in February 2024.
The laws he appeared to reference were the affirmative consent laws, which had been implemented in four Australian states and one territory.
Queensland was the most recent to introduce the model, with reforms taking effect in March 2024.
Under this model, all participants must clearly express consent, with a requirement for verbal or physical confirmation.
In cases of alleged sexual assault, an accused person could not rely on an assumption of consent without proof they had taken active steps to confirm it.
New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, and Tasmania had also introduced similar reforms.
Irving repeatedly claimed these changes were ‘one-sided’ and insisted he had no intention of returning to Australia.
He had numerous videos criticising what he called ‘female-run societies’, where he alleged women had too much power and ‘no self-control’.
At one point, he complained it was ‘unfair’ that he was expected to control himself and ‘not punch’ a woman during an argument.
In just a few days, he had uploaded 30 videos, ranting about women, consent laws, his supposed high IQ, and other grievances.
His YouTube channel featured similar content, along with a website titled *Full Time Digital Nomads*, which included posts such as ‘Masculine vs Female-Run Countries’ and ‘Why Women Can’t Apologize: Is It Evolutionary or Learned?’.
His tirades did not go unnoticed, with many women calling him out online.
Influencer Gabby Goessling, who had over 368,000 followers, said she could not believe ‘someone like this exists’.
‘It’s hilarious but it is also scary,’ she said in a recent video.
‘I cannot believe it. Does he not realise there are millions of normal men that are just living their life and everything is fine because they aren’t going to [sexually assault] someone?’
Women’s safety advocate and podcaster Mia Findlay also responded after Irving accused her of wanting to ‘humiliate’ him.
‘I don’t need to lift a finger to humiliate you mate. Your value system is humiliating, your belief system is humiliating. Your use of your precious time and energy on your one go on this planet, that’s humiliating,’ she said.
Another well-known creator, Rach McQueen, dismissed Irving’s rants, stating: ‘Seems like you are pretty desperate for some attention there bro.’
Many others joined in, mocking his emotional outbursts.
‘I think he just needs to calm down, like he’s just VERY emotional,’ one person commented.
‘That guy is giving the podcast bitter blokes some competition,’ another joked.
Others pointed out the irony in his behaviour.
‘Doesn’t want to be humiliated then commences to humiliate himself!’ one wrote.
Another simply said, ‘He’s cooked.’
For those curious about Irving’s perspective, he has shared more about his views in a video on his channel.
