‘Crazy’ change to Coles & Woolworths mud cakes leaves shoppers fuming

We all know how delicious the chocolate mud cakes are at the supermarket. And whether it’s spoiling yourself after a long week or picking up the timeless dessert to give as a surprise gift to the grandkids, mud cakes have long been an Australian favourite.

However, it seems the prices of everyone's favourite go-to desserts are going up – and it's leaving most supermarket shoppers none too happy.

It seems that nothing is immune to inflation these days, as a long-adored dessert staple has become the latest item to receive an ‘outrageous’ price increase.

Sharing to the popular social media forum Reddit, a Coles customer revealed that the store’s Chocolate Mud Cakes are now priced at $6.40.

It was reported that in February, the popular bakery item was priced at $5.75. Prior to that, the mud cakes cost just $4.80.

Not only that but according to its website, Woolworths Cake Chocolate Mud also increased its price to $6.40 – the same price as Coles.

On Reddit, one shopper described the price increase as a ‘national tragedy’, with other Reddit users quickly following suit and slamming the rise, describing it as a ‘bloody outrage’.

‘Crazy! It seems so recently these were like $4 or even $3.50,’ wrote one disgruntled customer.

Another agreed and replied: ‘They also shrunk a bunch over the years.’

Others believe that the mud cakes were impacted by ‘shrinkflation’, a term that’s been popularised in recent years and used to describe when consumer costs increase but the amount of product you receive ‘shrinks’ or is visibly reduced. Shrinkflation isn’t a separate entity from inflation. Rather, it’s a specific part of it. You can read this article for more details about this phenomenon.

Earlier last month, it was reported that the beloved Maxibon ice creams had reduced the size and weight of their sweet treats to help offset their expenses. Unlike other sellers or manufacturers, however, Maxibon forewarned its customers of the size reduction.

‘Tough times mean tough changes,’ they posted on their social media platforms. You can read the rest of this story here.

One shopper wrote about how every item seems to be going up ‘another 20c’ lately.

‘So many things are now double the cost of a year ago, and the specials no longer seem very special. Saving 20c off the $6.50 price of something isn't a great saving, and the stuff on half price these days is always the cr** that no one buys anyway – some obscure item they bought a shipload of to sell once cheap and never be seen again,’ they explained.

Another responded: ‘From $4 to this in under a year. Horrific.’

‘Welp, it’s official. There is no reason for the Aussie $5 note,’ one quipped.

Others agreed it was a ‘national disgrace’ and said ‘protests should be planned for every capital city until this stops’.

Some speculated that both Coles and Woolies are ‘guilty of price gouging’.

‘After huge hikes, they have now started to advertise that they have cut prices...But only by a fraction of what they have raised them,’ they added.

‘Apparently, 100 per cent inflation seems fair?’ Someone else responded.

‘Coles have been lifting prices on things than in a month or so, dropping the price to a "LOCKED" price. Absolute scamming,’ one more replied.

Other social media users argued that, despite the increase, the mud cakes were still ‘great value’.

‘Six dollars for a whole cake is still absurdly cheap, to be fair – haven’t bought one in years, I would have thought they were at least $10,’ one remarked.

Another responded: ‘Yeah, there’s a small coffee shop in my local shops that sells small, simple cakes for $80 to $100. They’re i***ts, but yeah, $6 for a decent cake is still fantastic.’

‘It’s not even that bad, though. $6.40 for a cake is cheap as, let’s be real,’ someone else wrote.

A spokesperson for Coles responded to the claims online and explained that several factors contributed to the price hike.

‘As a result of the rising cost of raw materials and production, there have been some changes to the price of our Coles mud cakes,’ the spokesperson told reporters.

They added: ‘We know this is a popular product for our customers, and we do not take these price changes lightly.’

It is understood that the cost of raw materials across wheat, sugar and chocolate, as well as production, has led to the price increase on Coles mud cakes.

Everything has gone up and still every fortnight when we shop prices have gone up yet again. I used to buy a carton of pepsi max for $19 then it was $24 now just yesterday it is $35.50 I couldn't believe it. Guess I won't be buying pepsi again :( Toilet paper was $8 now it is $12 Can't afford much these days and it is just getting worse unfortunately.

None of the staples are on special anymore. Seems to be crap that I dont buy. Chips lollies shampoo oh and beer and alcohol??? How about some actual food items on special. Help families out instead of hiking up the price of food items every week. I have been trying to lose weight I guess now is the perfect time to starve myself.

There are some organisations including the major super markets making vast profits by ripping off their customers. One instance Woolies own tissues were $1 a box went up to $1.30 I didn't count the number of tissues possibly less of them as well. But it;s all over $248 to get a heating trades person (home visit) that's before any thing is done then $25 for every 15 mins plus any parts that are used how can cost be justified?

Same here, I no longer buy Pepsi for the same reason,. They actually did me a favour, used to buy 3 or 4 packs of 30 per fortnight, now I buy none, better for my hip pocket and my waist line.
Not too worried about the mud cake, I make my own biscuits and cakes these days.
I have found quite a few ways to save recently, the main one is I now shop 4 weekly instead of fortnightly. As I live in the country it is a 3 hour round trip to shop so this has saved me in excess of $50 in petrol.
I now do a 4 week meal plan and shop from that plan and have found this also saves me quite a bit. Not being at the shops so often stops me being tempted to buy things I don't really need.

We're being done over by all suppliers, the government and the reserve bank - not to forget the banks and the energy companies.
The quoted inflation rate is currently 7.8 %.
Anyone who shops at Coles or Woolworths (or other supermarkets) can tell you that this is far from the truth - and that's just food. Everything is going up. The "real" inflation rate foe everyday stuff is considerably higher than the quoted 7.8%. The reporting here is all smoke & mirrors.
I can't speak much about Woolworths as I've generally been using Coles but no more.
Coles are behaving in a deceptive & manipulative way - they put up price tags saying "reduced by xx%" or "save $x.nn" after putting up the price the week before.
As for the suppliers (the stuff on the shelf) I see the physical size of the box/jar/pack being the same but the amount inside has often been reduced.
The reserve bank, the reserve bank members and the pollies don't seem to get it. But of course, they get paid mega dollars (lowe's salary is $911,000+ per annum) and the pollies salaries start at around $210,000+. These people don't have to worry about prices - and probably don't have to pay at the register for their own shopping anyway.
I don't trust any of them.

Buy a soda stream and make your own you can buy the syrup it is a lot cheaper and I have noticed in the catalogues that come out the only vege and meat is always on 2 or 3 if you are lucky the rest is chips sweets chocolates and you cant make a meal on that.

They added: ‘We know this is a popular product for our customers, and we do not take these price changes lightly.’
And there you have it folks, popular product, wack up the price and make huge profits over and above the cost of raw materials and rising costs!!
My Dad use to have a saying: we are the bottom of the pecking order and there is no one below us to peck!! This is so true!!
No more mud cakes for my family, unless they are 'marked down'!!

Yes everything has gone up but not like in the past when it was just a few cents it is now larger amounts. I was in Coles yesterday and saw Weetbix has gone up. It had been $5 for sometime and now it is $6 How can they justify that increase

I have seen that too - how is it supermarkets can just put items up in the $ bracket - i have also noticed that where they say prices will stay the same (locked in) other items that i buy e.g. coles tissues brand are now $1.70 and this is with everything - so in actual fact where they reduce prices, they whack this onto other items by putting them up - we the shoppers are not stupid and we can see this! How about being fair as everyone is struggling and the major supermarkets make good profits - it always seems to be about profit when it comes to business! There is profit which a business needs to pay all the outlays of power, water, rates, wages etc, & then to make some profit and then there is greed!

Went to buy a new mat for gym classes before Easter at Big W, $12, of course, walked out of the shop with everything but the mat - went on Wednesday to get it - $16 !!!
Thats a big hike-it is like they just don't seem to care about the customer much these days - oh, we'll just put this up and that up when we feel like it! $4.00 is a lot to go up at once, takes away from being able to use that $4.00 on something else that needs to be purchased.
