Content warning: This article discusses bullying and online harassment.

Australian influencer Sophia Begg has sparked a heated discussion online, but not for the reason she expected. A recent video of her hair transformation quickly turned attention to her eyebrows. Viewers immediately focused on the shape, size, and style of her brows rather than her fresh blonde highlights.

Begg, who goes by Sopha Dopha online, addressed the backlash in a follow-up clip, saying: ‘It has come to my attention just a little bit that some of you guys don’t love my brows.’

‘The other day I posted a hair transition … it was supposed to be about the hair … but you guys made your opinions very clear about the brows,’ she added.

The 21-year-old said she noticed the eyebrow discussion almost immediately and while she and her boyfriend found it ‘funny’, the comments still struck a nerve.

Childhood bullying shaped her insecurities

Begg revealed her insecurities about her eyebrows started from playground bullying.

Basically, I’ve been bullied about my brows pretty much my whole life.

‘I remember when I was in primary school I had like a raging monobrow – or a unibrow – and they just grew at such a rapid rate.’

Natural brows, not dyed

Her eyebrows are naturally much darker than her blonde hair, leading some to assume she dyes them.

People think I dye my eyebrows, but I don’t. This is the natural colour of them.

By high school, the teasing became so relentless that she decided to shave her brows off and draw them in daily.

The bullying was so bad that I was like, okay, something has to be done – clearly the brows are not it. So I literally shaved my brows off and drew them in every day.

Professional help didn’t work

Begg described her brows as her ‘biggest insecurity’ and said they look like ‘huge slugs’ when styled upwards.

She explained she had previously gone to a professional to fix her brows after social media criticism, but she didn’t like the results.

I have had my brows professionally done before because I was getting so much hate on social media, and everyone was like, “You’ve got to go get them done”. And then I actually hated how they looked. I just didn’t think it suited me at all.

A message for concerned grandparents

How to support young people with body image concerns

Listen without judgment when they share their experiences

Avoid making comments about anyone’s appearance - positive or negative

Share stories about how beauty standards have changed over time

Don’t engage in negative or berating talk about your body or anyone else’s

Adolescents with positive maternal relationships had a weaker link between social media use and body dissatisfaction

Parents who monitor social media use help children make fewer appearance comparisons and support mental health

Online reactions and edited images

A follower once even edited a version of her face with thinner brows to show her how they ‘should’ look, but Begg said she didn’t like them.

Someone in the comments edited my face and was like, “Here you go babe, I fixed them for you” … and I looked so bad.

Sophia Begg

She finished by saying she might one day regret how she styles her brows, but for now, she was happy with them.

I know I’ll look back in like two years and think, what the f*** was I doing? But that is my mistake to make.

Sophia Begg

Continued critique from fans

Despite her explanation, many fans continued to critique her brows.

‘Please see what we see,’ one commented.

Others questioned whether her eyebrow style was deliberate ‘rage bait’ for engagement, while some said they looked ‘crazy’ and ‘took over her whole face’.

Many were confused by her insistence that her brows were her biggest insecurity, yet she purposely brushed them up to appear larger.

Supporting young people with social media pressure

What This Means For You

If you’re supporting a young person navigating social media and body image, one hour of social media per day appears to be a healthier limit, and regular tech-free family time can strengthen protective relationships.

Open conversations about changing beauty standards provide perspective, and professional help is available through services like Headspace and Kids Helpline. Have you ever felt judged for a feature you’ve always been insecure about?
