When we think of pantry staples, rice is often at the top of the list. It's a versatile ingredient that can be the foundation of countless meals, which is why many keep a bag or two in their kitchen cupboards.
But a recent incident at an ALDI store has given one shopper, and potentially many others, a reason to pause and inspect their pantry goods more closely.
Jadie, a shopper from Charlestown, near Newcastle, New South Wales, was taken aback when she discovered something unexpected in her bag of Imperial Grain white rice purchased from ALDI.
After pouring some rice, she noticed a 'gross' blue substance mixed in with the grains.
‘I thought at first, actually, that it was like a measuring cup,’ she said.
‘No, it's the rice dyed, I think, from the bag, and it's all hard and gross.’
The rice was not only discoloured but also hardened, making it quite unappetising.
This unsettling find prompted Jadie to urge others to examine their rice, especially if it's the same brand from ALDI.
The cause of the blue contamination remains a mystery, as ALDI has not provided a comment on the matter.
However, the supermarket chain does have a protocol for such concerns, encouraging customers to reach out directly via their help centre to initiate an investigation.

This isn't the first time ALDI's Imperial Grain rice has been under scrutiny.
Just before Jadie's discovery, another customer, Richard Ellis from Keilor Downs, Victoria, reported finding what he described as a 'dead mouse' in his packet of Imperial Grain rice from ALDI.
Understandably, this left him feeling nauseated and distressed.
'I feel like I'm going to throw up just talking about it,' he said.
