‘Absolutely devastated’: Beloved Aussie TV show axed again after shocking decision

For decades, it has been a staple of Aussie television, captivating audiences with its drama, heart, and unforgettable characters.

But recent developments have left fans reeling, with speculation swirling about the future of this beloved soap.

What seemed like a triumphant return is now facing an uncertain fate, sparking disappointment and frustration among devoted viewers.

Neighbours fans woke up to heartbreaking news—the beloved Aussie soap was being axed once again.

Just two years after Amazon revived the long-running series following its cancellation by Ten, it was confirmed that the streaming giant would also be pulling the plug.

Production was set to wrap in July, with the final episode scheduled to air in December.

A spokesperson for Ten expressed gratitude to Australian audiences for their unwavering support, acknowledging the efforts that kept Neighbours on air for over 400 episodes.

‘We are grateful to all those who worked so hard to keep Neighbours on air for more than 400 episodes,’ the spokesperson said.

‘It is a mighty achievement that the series will reach the 40-year milestone next month. The program will be missed by the fans and the people who have been part of this amazing journey. We wish them well.’

Amazon also issued a statement, recognising the show's impact and legacy over the past four decades.

Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally and in the UK. Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years, spanning over 400 episodes.’

Executive producer Jason Herbison expressed disappointment that Neighbours was ending, insisting there were still many stories left to tell.

‘Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years,’ he said.

‘We value how much the fans love Neighbours and we believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future.’

The reboot had brought back fan-favourite stars Ryan Moloney, Jackie Woodburne, and Alan Fletcher.

It also featured international names like The O.C. star Mischa Barton.

Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Stause was also in the show.

Fans wasted no time voicing their devastation, with many taking to social media to plead for the show’s survival.

‘Absolutely devastated that Neighbours is being axed again,’ one fan wrote.

Another said: ‘Just heard that #Neighbours is being axed again. I am beyond gutted.’

Another fan begged: ‘I can’t believe it. Please let it not be true #Neighbours to be axed again. Please @PrimeVideo @neighbours say it’s just a rumour.'

Someone else fumed: ‘Neighbours is axed again?? Ffs why bring it back in the first place then.’

The soap was initially cancelled in June 2022 after 37 years on air when Channel 5, the UK broadcaster that covered most of the production costs, withdrew its funding.

At the time, the official Neighbours social media account confirmed the cancellation, stating: ‘Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show.’

‘To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.’

More than 60,000 fans signed a petition to save the series, leading to Amazon Freevee stepping in to revive it in November 2022, just four months after its supposed final episode aired.

Fremantle CEO Jennifer Mullin shared her excitement at the time, stating: ‘Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world.’

‘We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades, so we are thrilled that we have found a new home.’

The revival premiered in September 2023, marking a fresh chapter for Ramsay Street—one that now, unfortunately, is coming to an end once again.
