    General Discussion Thread 24.03.2025

My daughter is 37 and somehow in her education being able to do any type of maths in her head was not taught. Even now when we go shopping she will ask me what multiples of items cost or reaches for the calculator on her phone. The other thing we oldies can do is live without a mobile phone -...

    Newspaper Kiosk

The kiosk was great in Martin Place as there were not convenience stores close by then as most buildings were offices, banks etc. Many people stopped for their newspaper on the way to and from work when there was an afternoon edition newspaper which you read on the way home on the train. No...

'The Purple People Eater' by Sheb Wooley

My husband used to DJ and has a life long love of rock n roll, pop and everything else so this was one of the many songs that got frequent airplay at the time. Didn't we live through a great few decades of music?

'People are already distressed': Scammers take advantage of vulnerable individuals with this scheme

At a time of sorrow for losing a loved one how heartless and cruel are these scammers. Only communicate with the funeral director and no one else. It is so sad that these scammers are making an already difficult time even harder.

This shocking bridal look has the internet in an uproar – would it be your choice?

My parents got married in 1947 and after the war in England everything was in short supply and rationing still happening. Mum wore a beautiful gown with long sleeves, high neckline and satin slippers. She had plain short veil but her bouquet was big - it had beautiful chrysanthemums in it...

Check if you're qualified for this 'critical' cash boost from Centrelink!

When we were younger and working there was little emphasis on superannuation. These days workers are contributing for their retirement. However it seems many other things are being suggested to come out of the individual's super. My question is - will these future retirees be much better off...

    Avon Bubble Bath

When Avon was first available in Australia we loved looking through the catalogue and receiving your order either home delivered or many workplaces had an Avon lady so it was easy to get and not very expensive. They also had lots of seasonal gift ideas and bubble bath was a great favourite...

    Vertical Grill

They were great and cooked both sides of your chops etc at once. They were also healthy as all the fats and juices drained into the tray at the bottom. I didn't find them hard to clean either.

Mass closures announced—what’s shutting down as Cyclone Alfred moves in?

Latest information now is that the cyclone has slowed and is not expected to cross the coast until late Friday night or early Saturday morning. We live near Brisbane so like thousands of others we are hoping and praying everyone will get through this.

    Baby Health Centre

We had baby health clinics too in England when I was a child and I remember Mum taking my brother who was 6 years younger than me. After the nurse did a health check we were given bottles of concentrated orange juice (yum) and cod liver oil (yuk). I can still remember the awful taste - I...

    Akta-vite

I can remember this and it was marketed as a healthy drink. Somehow I preferred Milo (and still do.!)
