Zoo in Denmark faces backlash after asking public to bring in animals as food

The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark is facing a backlash after it put out a call for the public to bring in animals to feed the predators it has.

Only healthy animals are accepted by the zoo, which has been accepting donated animals for several years.

What's next?

The zoo specified that it was looking in particular for chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses.

Any chickens or rabbits to spare? Denmark's Aalborg Zoo is seeking animals to feed to its predators — after they have been euthanised — a plea that has sparked a public backlash.

"We are looking for small livestock, not pets," Anette Sofie Warncke Nutzhorn, one of the zoo's managers, told AFP on Tuesday.

"It can be for instance a chicken that doesn't lay eggs anymore."

"Predators usually catch prey of this size, so it's like the natural course," she added.

The zoo has found itself in hot water since sending out the appeal on social media, last week.

"If you have an animal that, for various reasons, has to go, you are welcome to donate it to us."
The zoo specified that it was looking in particular for chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses.

"The animals are carefully put down by qualified staff and then used as food," it said.

"It is a very common practice, we were just sending a friendly reminder," Ms Warncke Nutzhorn said.

The zoo later turned off the comments section on the social media post in response to what it called "hateful" postings.

Practices at Danish zoos, particularly the euthanasia of healthy animals to limit the risk of inbreeding, have in the past triggered fierce international criticism.

In 2014, a giraffe calf named Marius was put down at the Copenhagen Zoo and staff later performed an autopsy on the carcass in front of visitors, before feeding it to the lions.

I don't see an issue with this, the zoo animals need to eat and livestock wont live forever. It is euthanised beforehand so won't know any difference. What do people think zoos normally feed the carnivores in the first place?

I was told by a friend that our local animal park will take old chickens from anyone who wants rid of them. I naively asked why they wanted a chicken display among all the crocs and wallabies, only to be told they are used to feed the crocs!! Wow!! I would have never thought of that, and I have visited there many times over the years. I suppose the crocs need a good feed, but.......

I saw a story on t.v. Years ago saying this, they were carving up an elephant that had died to feed the lions, etc even raptors. What do people think that they’ll dig a big hole to bury them.🌞
Oh! And I don’t see anything wrong with this either.

ok am I just weird because I don't see anything wrong with this - they euthanise the animals before feeding. Anyway, where do you think the previous food came from - animals specifically bred to be they food, which were euthanised in the same way they intend to do with new food. And, lets get down to basic - don't we as humans do exactly the same thing to get the meat which we eat.

Not guinea pigs, they are pets - oik, oik. :(

Crocs are fed chooks most of the time anyway. Only difference would be the zoo would save money from the donations.
