Sunday Classics 12.10.2025

Hey members!

We’re dialling it back to the days of Aussie rock’n’roll this Sunday—with a shoutout to @EllieN for the gem of a pick! This week’s classic is 'I Thank You' by the one and only Johnny O’Keefe, often dubbed Australia’s King of Rock and Roll. Released in the early '60s, this song oozes charm, gratitude, and that signature toe-tapping swagger J.O’K was known for.

'I Thank You' blends heartfelt lyrics with an irresistibly upbeat rhythm—making it as perfect for a dance hall spin as it is for a Sunday sing-along. And let’s not forget: Johnny O’Keefe wasn’t just a performer—he was a trailblazer. One of the first Australian rock artists to crack the US charts and host his own TV show, he helped lay the foundation for the country’s modern pop scene.

So give this one a whirl and imagine a time when rock’n’roll was fresh, loud, and just getting started. And as always—what should we spin next? Drop your classic suggestions in the comments below!

When living on the Gold Coast in the early1970's my husband was the bus tour driver taking holiday makers out at night to the various night spots on the coastal strip. On one occasion when I was able to go with him we sent to "Surferers Parasite" (as my children called it) to see Johnny O'Keefe at one of the nightspots. He was going well until the French ex-wife of a Famous Radio Announcer from Sydney came in demanding to see her friend Johnny. She was drunk at the time and caused quite a commotion when the doorkeepers tried to throw her out and she even managed to get in a second time and again interrupt the show. Johnny took it all in good heart and just ignored her. Made my rare night out though!

Thank you for featuring this tune. J O’k was a ripper.
