The unthinkable has happened in Australian diplomacy. For the first time since World War II, Australia has expelled a foreign ambassador, severing diplomatic ties with Iran and leaving thousands of Australians stranded with severely limited consular support.

The expulsion of Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi marks the first time Australia has expelled an ambassador since World War II, following explosive revelations from Australia's spy agency that Iran orchestrated antisemitic attacks on Australian soil.

A morning that changed everything

On 6 December 2024, at approximately 4:10 am, an arson terrorist attack took place at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne, injuring one member and causing significant damage.

What initially appeared to be a hate crime has now been revealed as something far more sinister—a foreign government directing attacks against Australians.

The attack could have been catastrophic, with a synagogue board member noting that if it had happened an hour later, 'there would have been hundreds of people inside.' One congregant who escaped suffered burns to his hands, and the synagogue's interior was 'completely gutted'.

'If you're thinking of going to Iran, please don't'

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong

The Orthodox Adass Israel Synagogue, built in 1965 and part of a congregation founded in 1949 by Holocaust survivors from Hungary, has become the centre of an international diplomatic crisis that has implications for every Australian with connections to Iran.

The intelligence that shocked a nation

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess revealed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed the attacks 'through a series of cut-outs' - a complex network of intermediaries designed to hide Iran's involvement. The operation wasn't limited to Melbourne.

ASIO also linked Iran to an October 2024 arson attack on Lewis' Continental Kitchen near Bondi Beach in Sydney, a kosher restaurant that had served the community for more than 50 years.

Authorities believe Iran paid criminal networks using cryptocurrency to carry out the attacks.

Australia's response to Iran

Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three diplomatic staff expelled (7 days to leave)

Australian embassy in Tehran suspended operations

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps to be listed as terrorist organisation

$31+ million pledged to rebuild synagogue and enhance Jewish community security

Travel warning elevated to highest level: 'Do Not Travel'

What this means for Iranian-Australians

The diplomatic rupture has created a crisis for the estimated 2,000-4,000 Australians believed to be in Iran, who now face extremely limited consular assistance. Iran does not recognise dual nationality, and Australia's ability to provide consular support to dual Australian-Iranian nationals is extremely limited.

For older Australians who may have family connections to Iran or had planned visits, the situation is particularly concerning. Foreigners in Iran, including Australians, are at high risk of arbitrary detention or arrest, with foreign and dual nationals having been detained without due process.

A relationship built over decades, shattered in hours

Australia has maintained a long-standing bilateral relationship with Iran, with an uninterrupted diplomatic presence since opening its embassy in Tehran in 1968. Iran has maintained its embassy in Canberra since 1971.

This 57-year diplomatic relationship came to an abrupt end when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attacks as 'extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation' designed to undermine Australia's social cohesion.

The broader picture: rising antisemitism

This diplomatic crisis sits within a disturbing context. Antisemitic incidents in Australia have skyrocketed, with 2,062 incidents recorded between October 2023 and September 2024, compared to 495 incidents the year before. Physical assaults on Jews in Australia spiked from 11 the previous year to 65.

Recent months have seen synagogues, schools, and homes firebombed, nurses threatening to kill Jewish patients, and the discovery of a trailer filled with explosives intended for a Sydney synagogue. The Iranian-directed attacks represent a new and more dangerous escalation.

Practical implications for travellers

Essential information for travellers

  • All travel to Iran should be avoided—government advice is 'Do Not Travel'

  • Australians currently in Iran urged to leave immediately if safe to do so

  • Australian embassy in Tehran is closed—no consular services available

  • Dual citizens face particular risks as Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality

  • Contact Australian Government 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre: 1300 555 135 (within Australia) or +61 2 6261 3305 (outside Australia)

The travel implications extend beyond immediate safety concerns. Airlines may cancel or reduce operations to and from Iran at short notice, and some countries have restrictions on travellers coming from Iran. Travel insurance may also be affected when governments issue 'do not travel' advisories.

The human cost

Beyond the diplomatic manoeuvring lies real human impact. The Adass Israel congregation raised more than $600,000 for reconstruction after the fire and has restarted weekday services at a new temporary synagogue, with the location kept secret for security reasons.

Jewish community leaders welcomed the government's action but criticised those who initially dismissed the attacks as hoaxes. Victims said the events left them 'terrified for their safety'.

Looking ahead

The government will legislate to list Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, bringing Australia in line with the United States, which designated the IRGC as a terrorist group in 2019.

While some diplomatic lines will remain open to advance Australia's interests, Foreign Minister Penny Wong has urged Australians in Iran to return home and warned others against travelling there.

What This Means For You

This unprecedented diplomatic rupture serves as a stark reminder that international tensions can suddenly and dramatically affect ordinary Australians' ability to travel safely. For seniors who may remember the Cold War era, this represents the most significant diplomatic crisis involving Australia in decades.

The message from Canberra couldn't be clearer: if you're in Iran, come home. If you're thinking of going, don't.

What are your thoughts on Australia's diplomatic response to these revelations? Have you been affected by the travel restrictions, or do you have family or friends who might be? Share your perspective in the comments below.

I do not support ANY fake god, deity or idol.

Nor do I support camel riding dune coon terrorists in any shape or form.

Support Palestine and you support Hamas. Remember that Palestinians, before the Israel/Gaza conflict, gave Hamas an approval rating of 58%. They only have themselves to blame.

Simple as that.
"Remember that Palestinians, before the Israel/Gaza conflict, gave Hamas an approval rating of 58%". Hamas didn't exist in 1948, which is when Israel began Plan Dalet. You can't even get your facts straight.

And what about now in Ukraine... 3 years later, not one single word about the children dying...
Plenty of words Vegetable. Stop making up lies to suit your rotten and fermenting agenda.

You forget one thing - a FUCKWIT!

You must be a Hamas supporter and apologist to make the twisted comments above.

Go HOME to your beloved Indian and Pakistani infested sewer called GREAT (sic) BRITAIN.

And renounce your Australian passport before you slither out of the country.
My Head of State, numbnuts, is YOUR Head of State.

You would not be here were it not for the United Kingdom.

My flag still DOMINATES yours. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

NEVER FORGET THAT, Mr Vegetable. 🖕

Well piss back off to The Old Dart and rattle the bones of Queen Lizzy, you disgusting necrophile.

Meanwhile, book in for your 72 vestal virgins. Don't forget, they come with 72 mothers-in-law! :ROFLMAO:

More false information!
"Palestine" has been given at least 100 times more "funding", not only from other Islamic countries (the wealthiest on the planet, who support Hamas), but also from moronic 'supporters' worldwide, who don't realise that ALL the funding they think they're sending to "Palestine" is going to HAMAS!

Where do you think Hamas got the money to build a tunnel 400km long to stash that huge mound of ammunition (photos shown on many sites on videos and TV)?
Why do you think Gaza looks like and is, a shithole, no schools, no support, no food????
The only reason Palestinian civilians are alive today, is because ISRAEL HAS BEEN FEEDING THEM FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS!!!!!

You never hear of all the CIVILIANS in Israel getting murdered, Just last night on Channel 9 News, they announced again that 'Israel has "BEGUN" another attack! But nobody knows that 3 days earlier, 6 Jewish CIVILIANS (most elderly) were murdered on a municipal bus!
Well, that attack that Israel "started" was a revenge attack that killed 5 LEADERS OF HAMAS!
HAMAS murdered 12 MUSLIM soccer players, young boys aged 10-12, because they were Israeli citizens!
Don't point fingers until you KNOW.
Feel free to look up ALL this information in Google and THEN decide who the REAL MURDERERS are!

Israel NEVER deliberately attacks civilians, but terrorist organisations have been doing it DAILY to Israel since the beginning of the state's existence in 1948!
I LIVED there and saw it EVERY day WITH MY OWN EYES!
So, you specifically, Mark@Home - get a bloody education about what is REALLY THE TRUTH and stop believing what you want to hear!
You are a blatant BULLSH*TTER!
Remember, all the propaganda before the Holocaust? It's the same propaganda now!
Just because it may be larger... it doesn't make it TRUE!
QUALITY is priority... NOT QUANTITY!!!!
Oh really? Your posts aren’t about truth — they’re about fuelling hate and division. Let’s be honest about that.
A few facts:

  • No, Hamas didn’t build a 400km tunnel with donations from ‘moronic supporters’. Most of the aid going into Gaza comes from humanitarian organisations and countries — and it’s overwhelmingly directed toward food, water, medical supplies, and basic infrastructure. Hamas has diverted some of it, yes — and they should absolutely be held accountable for that. But twisting that into ‘everyone supports Hamas’ is dishonest and inflammatory.
  • Claiming Israel has been 'feeding Palestinians for 20 years' erases the reality of a military blockade that has severely limited food, fuel, and medical supplies into Gaza — as confirmed by the UN and multiple independent NGOs. If Israel was fully supporting the humanitarian needs of Gazans, there wouldn’t be UN food agencies and humanitarian groups operating in emergency mode.
  • Civilian deaths happen on both sides — and they matter equally. Pointing to one attack while ignoring others doesn’t create truth, it creates propaganda. Yes, Hamas has committed horrific acts. But pretending Israel has never harmed civilians — despite overwhelming documentation from groups like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and even Israeli veterans’ organisations — is false and dangerous.
  • Comparing criticism of a government or military campaign to Holocaust propaganda is not only misleading — it’s offensive. Weaponising that tragedy to shut down legitimate concern about Palestinian lives undermines the memory of that horror and cheapens the meaning of “Never Again.”

So you support Islam that says "Kill every Infidel on the planet, if they don't convert!"
Try running for President!
"So you support Islam that says "Kill every Infidel on the planet, if they don't convert!"

Blatantly false and Islamophobic
.

Islam, like other major religions, is not a monolith and does not preach extermination of non-Muslims. This is a common trope used by far-right and anti-Muslim voices to demonise 1.9 billion people based on the actions of extremists.

Religious texts, including those of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, can all be interpreted in violent or peaceful ways depending on context, politics, and leadership.

And what about now in Ukraine... 3 years later, not one single word about the children dying...
Not sure what you're not reading??
The suffering of children in Ukraine, Gaza, or anywhere else shouldn't be used as some kind of scoreboard. If you're only bringing up Ukraine to downplay what's happening in Gaza — or vice versa — you're not actually concerned about civilian deaths. You're just trying to score a point.

Real compassion isn’t selective. It doesn’t say 'what about those kids over there?' to ignore the ones dying right now. War is horrific wherever it happens — and civilians always pay the highest price. We should be able to condemn that without needing to compare body counts.

MiOiz is wrong? It is you who are brainwashed my friend.
The quran reads in a number of places their intent to kill all infidels. In 109 places to be exact.

In a Thailand Life Site.

"William Page is a wonderful person, but his whitewashing of the Koran cannot go unchallenged. There are at least 109 verses in the Koran urging Muslims to make war against non-believers in order to promote Islam, many containing graphic details such as the chopping off of heads and fingers.
Again and again Muhammad demands that “infidels” be murdered wherever they might by hiding. Muhammad also ordered the assassinations of poets who had satirised him.
Finally, it is important to note that many of the so-called verses of peace in the Koran have been abrogated – nullified in favour of the Surah (verse) of the Sword.
I am not a Christian, but the contrast between the life of Jesus and that of Muhammad could not be greater.
Jesus never hurt anyone, he preached love for all people and he lived a life of moral restraint. Muhammad (according to Muslim historians) ordered the assassination of enemies and the beheading of captives, preached Allah’s intense hatred for unbelievers, and spent his latter years wallowing in wives, sex slaves and wealth stolen in battle.
Jesus sent out apostles to convert by word. Muhammad sent out armies to convert or kill.

Oh brilliant, you've cracked the Quran wide open — after what, five minutes on a hate blog?
Incredible. Truly. Who needs context, history, or even a basic grasp of Arabic when you can just Google "scary Quran quotes" and pretend you're a theologian?
The “109 kill verses” myth has been passed around by racists with Wi-Fi for years. It’s been debunked by actual scholars, historians, and anyone who's read more than a meme — but sure, repost it like you’re breaking news.
And let’s not pretend this is about theology. You’ve made it crystal clear, post after post, that your real passion is punching down — especially at Muslims, Indigenous Australians, and basically anyone who doesn’t fit your 1950s fantasy of the world.
But hey, don’t stop now. Maybe next week you’ll dissect quantum physics using a cereal box. Or solve climate change with a Facebook post and a carton of VB.
Until then, here’s a thought: if you have to misquote a 1,400-year-old text to justify your fear and hate, maybe the problem isn’t the book — it’s you.

Do I detect an Islamophile fundamentalist?

Iran's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi doctrine is "Death to Israel".

So stick that in your hookah and smoke it!

Nope, not a ‘fundamentalist’ — just someone who doesn’t equate 1.9 billion people with the actions of fringe groups. If quoting extremists like Hezbollah or the Houthis is your idea of a religious argument, that says more about your biases than it does about Islam. Hate speech isn’t debate — it’s just noise.

Do you wear a hijab or niqab? Are you of Muslim descent? If the answer to both questions is YES, you are a Hamas apologist.

If your answer is NO, WTF are you doing supporting a terrorist regime?

Are you one of these fuckheads that go disrupting major cities with their flag waving and chanting shit? You are not Palestinian, so why carry on with Muslim fuelled shit?

From 1996 to 2024, 2740 Palestinians were admitted into Australia on family, child visas and skilled streams. Where do the other "100000" come from to populate these "protests"? Rent a crowd and freckled redheaded white skinned morons who nearest they've been to Gaza is Chapel Street, Melbourne.

Thanks for proving my point: you’re not here for discussion — just to abuse anyone who dares show empathy, nuance, or a basic grasp of human rights. Whether someone wears a hijab or has ever stepped foot in Palestine is irrelevant — it’s called decency to oppose hate, violence, and collective punishment. You can shout slurs and throw stereotypes, but that doesn’t strengthen your argument — it just exposes it.
And honestly, for someone who claims to ‘only deal in facts,’ you sure slosh around in a lot of toxic rage and conspiracy. Good night!

While you may feel the need to exercise that free will, the Jews regard them as commandments and feel obliged to obey them as God intended. In fact, there are 613 mitzvot, which Jews are commanded to live by. This is NOT about you or me. This is wholly about the hypocrisy of an arrogant and criminally aggressive people.

The zionists. They saw Palestine as theirs. They want it all for themselves and they don't want to share it with anyone who does not share their zionist views. Views, I might add, that are not shared by Christians, Muslims, agnostics or many Jews who, by and large, happily co-existed in Palestine. It is an immutable fact that, prior to 1948, the land was known as Palestine. Many Jews acknowledge this. Indeed, former Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir referred to herself as Palestinian.

In 1948, following the collapse of Lord Balfour's British Mandate, Jews were given land in Palestine to call their own. They were given land they had no entitlement to and were given it by people (by then the newly-formed United Nations) who had no right to give it away.

Instead of showing some gratitude, David Ben Gurion initiated what, to the Israelis was called Plan Dalet, yet to the Palestinians was the Nakba (the catastrophe). This started the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people. It continues to this day.

And so, the people who call themselves Jews, who regard themselves as superior to all living beings, who throw Palestinians out of their comes and occupy them, who murder babies, infants, journalists and doctors, who want to erase Gaza to make a Trump resort, who are claiming back the West Bank and make life hell in East Jerusalem, I call them "HYPOCRITES. Because what part of:

You shall not murder,

You shall not commit adultery,

You shall not steal,

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour,

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor,

do you not understand?
