Our local swimming pool won't open if there are not enough lifeguards. Don't know how we made it through life without being wrapped in cotton wool.

That's how I was taught to swim back in the 50's. Didn't do me any harm. It wasn't in a swimming pool either.

A case of either swim back to the side of the pool, or sink to the bottom.....pretty easy way to learn with only those two options available.......survival instincts kick in pretty quickly.

In the 50s, i was thrown into the swim hole (Not a Pool) ... I was jumping off the bottom toward the edge... when I got out I ran flat out to get away.. THEN I went back to boarding school .. IMMEDIATELY I enrolled in swimming lessons and trained so hard for 3 years and became the captain of the swimming team ... the fouyjr year I became a State Representive ... I wasn't going to be thrown in the swim hole again.
