Drivers licences

Just heard this morning from a elderly lady, her sister received a letter from the department in NSW stating that NSW, VIC, and parts of QLD she was saying as from the 1st of august 2025, all people over 60 have to have a full medical to drive now, does anyone know anything about this please?

Hi @bird65 ! According to what I found online, there’s no official rule starting 1st August 2025 that requires all people over 60 to have a full medical to drive. In NSW, VIC, and QLD, current requirements only kick in from age 75, when a yearly medical is needed. Some states also require an on-road test from age 85. So far, there’s no confirmed change to lower that age to 60, it sounds like there may have been a misunderstanding. Always best to check directly with your state’s transport department if you get a letter or want to be sure.
Hope this helps clear things up! For more information, you may visit https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/driver-and-rider-licences/older-drivers-and-riders/assessments. I hope this helps. 💖

I have just this month renewed my licence for ten years.. I am 72 years of age.. the only thing my letter stated was that for 75yr plus drivers , licence will only be issued for five years not ten..
At 75 you may need a medical certificate..

I'm in NSW and over 60 , haven't heard anything about this 'new' rule.

In Qld it is 75

Depends on your health and licence class as well as the state. I'm in NSW, diabetic and 75. I had to do a full list of things, including standard medical and eyesight tests and endocrinologist report to maintain my HR Licence, but downgraded to an LR so I could still do what I needed and only required the standard medical clearance form from my GP.

Not true for Queensland. My husband just had to do the yearly driving clearance (we are both over 75). Qld still needs only a yearly doctor’s clearance after 75 - doctor asked both of us to copy an image she had drawn, or draw a clock, place the hands in the appropriate position of a time she advised, eye test by reading specific lower line on eye chart, ask a few questions (month, year, date, day). Her signature and driver’s signature on a special Transport & Main Roads form, and that was it. We then have to carry the appropriate section of that form at all times while driving together with our licence. Not sure at what age actual driving test may/may not kick in but I believe the actual licence is only valid for 5 years at a time after age 75.

Yes, but in Qld from 75 doctor’s clearance every year but usually only eye-test, answer a few memory type questions, and a few other questions and observations then, if in doctor’s medical opinion on any other health issues, you are capable then doctor will sign the form.

There was a YouTube video on this exact subject. Think it's just to get more views. It's incorrect.

It can’t be a rule or law unless it’s been legislative, and at this point it’s a strong handed measure on the older people in this country. The older people are the better drivers as they don’t do the speeding or racing around the streets and not obeying the road rules. Perhaps if they do have a medical problem, that would be wise to be aware of and maybe some might have to have a doctors certificate for driving. But it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be allowed to drive. Thank you and god bless the older generation
