Content warning: This article discusses bullying and online harassment.

Australian influencer Sophia Begg has sparked a heated discussion online, but not for the reason she expected. A recent video of her hair transformation quickly turned attention to her eyebrows. Viewers immediately focused on the shape, size, and style of her brows rather than her fresh blonde highlights.

Begg, who goes by Sopha Dopha online, addressed the backlash in a follow-up clip, saying: ‘It has come to my attention just a little bit that some of you guys don’t love my brows.’

‘The other day I posted a hair transition … it was supposed to be about the hair … but you guys made your opinions very clear about the brows,’ she added.

The 21-year-old said she noticed the eyebrow discussion almost immediately and while she and her boyfriend found it ‘funny’, the comments still struck a nerve.

Childhood bullying shaped her insecurities

Begg revealed her insecurities about her eyebrows started from playground bullying.

Basically, I’ve been bullied about my brows pretty much my whole life.

Sophia Begg

‘I remember when I was in primary school I had like a raging monobrow – or a unibrow – and they just grew at such a rapid rate.’

Her eyebrows are naturally much darker than her blonde hair, leading some to assume she dyes them.

'People think I dye my eyebrows, but I don’t. This is the natural colour of them.'/p]

By high school, the teasing became so relentless that she decided to shave her brows off and draw them in daily.

'The bullying was so bad that I was like, okay, something has to be done – clearly the brows are not it. So I literally shaved my brows off and drew them in every day.'/p]

Begg described her brows as her ‘biggest insecurity’ and said they look like ‘huge slugs’ when styled upwards.

She explained she had previously gone to a professional to fix her brows after social media criticism, but she didn’t like the results.

'I have had my brows professionally done before because I was getting so much hate on social media, and everyone was like, “You’ve got to go get them done”. And then I actually hated how they looked. I just didn’t think it suited me at all.'

How to support young people with body image concerns

Listen without judgment when they share their experiences

Avoid making comments about anyone’s appearance - positive or negative

Share stories about how beauty standards have changed over time

Don’t engage in negative or berating talk about your body or anyone else’s

Adolescents with positive maternal relationships had a weaker link between social media use and body dissatisfaction

Parents who monitor social media use help children make fewer appearance comparisons and support mental health

Online reactions and edited images

A follower once even edited a version of her face with thinner brows to show her how they ‘should’ look, but Begg said she didn’t like them.

Someone in the comments edited my face and was like, “Here you go babe, I fixed them for you” … and I looked so bad.

Sophia Begg

She finished by saying she might one day regret how she styles her brows, but for now, she was happy with them.

I know I’ll look back in like two years and think, what the f*** was I doing? But that is my mistake to make.

Sophia Begg

Continued critique from fans

Despite her explanation, many fans continued to critique her brows.

‘Please see what we see,’ one commented.

Others questioned whether her eyebrow style was deliberate ‘rage bait’ for engagement, while some said they looked ‘crazy’ and ‘took over her whole face’.

Many were confused by her insistence that her brows were her biggest insecurity, yet she purposely brushed them up to appear larger.

What This Means For You

Sophia Begg’s story highlights how childhood bullying can leave lasting insecurities that may be reignited by online criticism.

It’s a reminder to approach comments about someone’s appearance with empathy—especially when you don’t know the history behind their choices.

For grandparents, fostering open conversations, setting healthy social media limits, and modelling positive body image can help young people navigate similar pressures.

If someone you know is struggling, encourage them to seek support from services like Headspace or Kids Helpline.

Childhood bullying sticks with you for life. I'm still traumatised and can't accept when people say something nice about me. My brother was the main offender and even though I cut him out of my life 2 years ago, I'm still battling the traumatised and the scars haven't faded.

I saw a show about how people are getting the hair from their head with the follicles attached so they can get them implanted into their eyebrows. Problem is they keep growing and have to be professionally shaped all the time and cost megabucks.😳

That’s horrible and I thought being called stork and twiggy as in a stick insect mean because I was so skinny. People used to say if my twigs snapped they’d go up my fanny or arse.😳
But I have beautiful legs even at 67 and I’m still thin.🌞

Absolutely! I’m 66 and still remember the names and faces of my childhood bullies from 60 years ago. I’m still sickened at the thought of them and what they did to me. Today,I’m a vocal critic of all forms of bullying and a child advocate in many local schools where a child is being bullied. Kids can be cruel and keyboard bullies are even worse. The things said from the safety of a screen are appalling.

I reckon the keyboard bullies are the worst bullies.☹️

Facebook and other on line platforms are rampant with bullying. And it's not necessarily kids, it's adults who should know better.

I represent this statement. o_O

Seriously, I've had a few gooses who have threatened me in SDC.

When confronted with an offer of a face to face meeting, they run for the hills, never to be seen again.

I contracted Polio at age of 10 and had to wear leg braces, very visible and I HATED looking “ different “. The name calling soon started which I put up with for a while but snapped one day when taunted with “ hoppy” . I pushed the offender as hard as I could and he fell backwoods into a wall coat hanger. Lots of blood and the Parents advised the Headmaster they were taking Legal Action agents me. They
were advised by the Head He observed the incident and considered the assailant completely to blame and would give evidence to that fact. As a
true “Gent” he was not present he was marking papers at the time. End of story.

Sounds like a scene from Midnight Express.

NOBODY abuses or bullies a person with a disability or impairment on my watch!

I can totally relate, I was also very skinny and teased about it. However, my main traumatiser was.... my mother... yes, believe it or not!

😳really that’s so sad.☹️

I was bullied throughout my entire primary school years only because I was the tallest amongst all the students in the school. The bulling would happen every day which affected my confidence so much. I guess I have my genes to thank for my extraordinary hight. However later in life, and a young adult, I was greatful having the longest legs amongst my peers, which kind of probably was my better features. Short skirts, skimpy tips, dancing all night at the disco, ahhh those were the days, that were free from stress, free from school yard bullies, free from financial issues and most of all, free from pain, just a healthy, happy-go-lucky life. 🙏🦋

It hurts enough getting them waxed! I only do them occasionally but it's a comfy thing, I get hot in summer lol. I've never understood the need to keep up with the Jones's about everything, especially fashion and beauty trends. I'll paint my nails and wear make-up if I'm going out for a night or to an event but otherwise I'm tok lazy to deal with all that!

I was a normal size until about 12 then I got bigger despite always been bullied about my looks from my brother. I really feel your pain and I would love to have your beautiful legs!
