No knock, no parcel: Aussie’s note to postie strikes a nerve

If you’ve ever waited all day for a parcel, only to find a dreaded 'Sorry we missed you' card in your letterbox—even though you were home the whole time—then you’re not alone.

In fact, one Aussie’s recent experience with Australia Post has struck such a chord that it’s gone popular, sparking a flood of delivery horror stories from frustrated customers across the country.

Let’s set the scene: a resident from Hermit Park in Townsville, desperate to finally receive a long-awaited pair of headphones, decided to take matters into their own hands.

Knowing they’d be upstairs studying and, crucially, deaf in one ear, they left a polite, handwritten note for their postie. The message, stuck to the outside wall of their door, read:

'Good morning Au Post! Please knock as I’m studying upstairs and am deaf in one ear. Thank you so much! :)'

Not only that, but the resident made sure the front door and windows were open, stayed home all day, didn’t wear headphones, and kept a close eye on the Australia Post app. You’d think that would be enough, right?

Wrong. Despite all these efforts, the parcel was not delivered.

Instead, the familiar notification popped up: 'We couldn’t deliver your parcel, so we’ve taken it to HERMIT PARK LPO for collection.'

The tracking confirmed the item was now waiting at the local post office—leaving the resident, in their own words, 'fuming' because they couldn’t pick it up until Thursday.

‘Proof that sometimes they’re too lazy to knock or even try to contact you. Fuming as I can’t pick it up till Thursday,’ the user wrote.

An Australia Post spokesperson responded to the situation, telling news.com.au: ‘We are keen to look into this matter further and encourage the customer to get in touch with us directly via our website or by calling.’

According to Australia Post, their drivers—often contractors—are instructed to knock three times, wait 30 seconds, and take a photo of the front door or intercom if they’re unable to complete a delivery. These images are made available to customers through the Australia Post app or customer support.

The original post sparked a flood of similar complaints from other users.

One person wrote: ‘I got the “Sorry your parcel could not be delivered due to not being able to get past stuff in the driveway” … But they walked past everything to put the parcel slip with a note on it exactly where the parcels get put.’

Another added: ‘I get the excuse “no safe location” when the safe location is my front door which is completely obscured from the street, and can’t see anything there – where they left the card.’

A third commented: ‘Every single time I order a parcel I stand on the balcony of my third-story flat and watch the Aus Post van pull into the driveway, put a notice in my mailbox and immediately drive off – drives me crazy!’

Another claimed: ‘They deliberately avoid delivery because it is quicker to just dump every delivery and the local post office.’

However, not everyone had complaints.

‘I had a postie once who would bang on the door and scream at the top of his lungs, “AUSTRALIA POST” even if I’m looking directly at him through the window near the door. God I miss that man,’ one person shared.

Another joked: ‘My postie knocks on my door like he has a warrant, I start hiding stuff around the house (that’s not even illegal) then I realise it’s just Australia Post.’

The renewed criticism comes after a separate incident last week, where an Australia Post driver was fired after being caught on CCTV pretending to deliver a parcel.

Video footage shared on Reddit captured the driver pulling up outside a home’s front gate and sitting in the vehicle for several minutes. The driver then exited the van — without the parcel — walked through the gate, took a photo, and left.

Australia Post later confirmed the driver had been terminated.

‘Australia Post has strict protocols for parcel delivery,’ a spokesperson said.

‘These actions clearly do not align with the standards we expect, and this driver is no longer delivering for Australia Post.’

So far I have been lucky my parcels have been left near my front door there were only 2
Occasions when I had to go and collect my parcel from my local post office
as I was not home. Which I can understand as there are a lot of units where I live .
Tomorrow I am expecting a fairly big package and I will not be home for a part
Of the morning it will be interesting to see IF the said package is left or will I have to go and collect it.

HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY DIDNT. WHOS THE MORON NOW?????????????????????

i once sent a video of my contract parcel delivery driver ....
he stops, pulls out a pre written card.
does not even attempt to pick up my parcel.
goes to the letterbox with the card
then drives away.

it happened so consistently, that i was able to predict it, and film it.
and still they kept there job.

the actual postie did a great job.
the parcel contractor was the problem.

now i live in a town that has no letter boxes at all ...
we have to go to the post office to collect everything.
but the farmers have the delivery service.
still walking a couple of houses away (the distance to the post office), is good for me.

Had 2 parcels delivered last week, one was left at the unit no 5 which clearly has number 5 on it (I’m no 2) they didn’t ring bell etc the other parcel was left at my front door in full view of the street, I was home all day waiting heard a noise and here was the courier about to leave, even when I opened the door he just ignored me and walked away! Lucky to get either parcel. So much for sign on delivery!

Our parcels automatically go to the post office. They don’t even try to deliver it. I phoned Aus Post years ago and they said our letterbox is not big enough. It is the contractors not delivering in my area. Grrrr

Dear member Lisa, thankyou for your post. Perhaps the person announced their issue on social media to allow other people to come forward, who may have had similar issues with the post, so they can describe their bad experience. When enough people express their issue publicly on social media, there is a high chance that those in the higher end of postal administration, will take action and correct the problem. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant week. 🙏🦋

Oh come on SDC Team, what the heck are you doing?

Australia Post later confirmed the driver had been terminated.

Did they really have the postie killed?

I've had this problem on a number of times but not with Australia post I had it with Couriers please. I actually saw him drop a card in my letterbox and never attempted to bring the parcel in. Infact he never even had the parcel in his hand.
I ran straight outside and saw him doing the exact same thing to a neighbour a few doors down. Of course I confronted him but he acted like he never understood English. I got my parcel and told him to knock on my neighbours door as they were home.

I reported it and was told someone would get back to me. Lucky I never held my breath as I'm still waiting.

Thank goodness my Australia Post delivery people are amazing

Several times I have waited for a delivery, and left a note on both doors. I just got a notice like this, and having no car to get there, this is doubly annoying.

It speaks!

Wonders will never cease!

But still angry.... 😡 🤣

How do you know they didn't also report it to Australia Post.
It's good that they shared it on social media so others will see its happening to a lot of people. Just look at the replies on here already.

Actually social media can help people. SDC is social media and plenty of times we have helped each other in one way or another

I love how you say it straight to the point but with so much calmness 😍

Our letter box is at the end of our dirt road about 800m away so all our letters and parcels are kept at our Post Office where ever we go we have to pass the PO so it isn't a problem to us and if we are not going anywhere my wife takes the dog for a walk to the post office
