Prebiotics vs. Probiotics: What’s the difference and why do you need both

When we think about gut health, we often go straight to probiotics. And fair enough, they’re the ‘good bacteria’ that help keep our digestion running smoothly.

But many people don’t realise that probiotics can’t do their job correctly without prebiotics.

In other words, if you take probiotics but do not support them with prebiotics, you might only see half the benefits.

That’s where Harmony of the Gods Prebiotic by Hercules Supplements* comes in. It is a thoughtful blend of both prebiotics and probiotics, working together to help your gut feel balanced, energised, and supported.

What’s the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?

To put it simply:
  • Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria that support your gut microbiome and immune system.
  • Prebiotics are the non-digestible fibres that feed those bacteria, helping them grow, survive, and thrive.

Imagine planting a garden (your probiotics) but never watering it (the prebiotics).

Without that nourishment, those good bacteria may never have a chance to settle in and do what they’re meant to do, especially in older adults whose digestive systems may already be stressed.

Scientific research backs this up: combinations of prebiotics and probiotics (synbiotics) are proven to perform better than probiotics alone regarding digestion, immunity, and overall gut balance.

Why both matter more than ever

Gut health is about more than just staying regular. It’s connected to how we feel every day.

An imbalanced gut can cause bloating, fatigue, skin issues, low mood, poor sleep, and even brain fog.

And these days, it’s easy for that balance to slip. Antibiotics, processed food, stress, alcohol, and even sleepless nights can chip away at our healthy gut bacteria.

So, while probiotics can help, they need fuel to flourish. Without prebiotics, those helpful bacteria may not make it very far, and you may wonder if your supplement is doing anything.

These things are rubbish.

I took Meluka Australia's P3 Gut Builder Triple Action Postbiotic Tonic until recently after having it daily as directed for several months.

All it did was constipate me to the extent that I needed Dulcolax to counter its effects!

"Prebiotics" are food for the good bugs in your gut.
The best prebiotics are unprocessed food - for dogs, it is oat bran. Other good ones are any source of 'soluable fibre'. Buy from the supermarket cereal section. Don't waste money on processed 'prebiotics'. Eat healthy food, don't rely on pills that just don't work.
(Case in point - Vitamin C is useless without something sometimes called Vitamin P, which can only be found in fresh fruit and vegetables. Vitamin C tablets are only useful if you need a mild urinary acidifyer)

Most Vitamin C tablets are acidic and damage your teeth.

Yup. I'm not advocating taking vitamin C - or any other vitamins. I merely tried to say Vit C tablets are of limited if you need vitamin C or risk getting scurvy. They certainly don't work to avert the common cold! But, being acidic and water soluable, they get peed out - and consequently are a mild urinary acidifier.
An orange, mandarin or kiwifruit tastes a lot better than a vitamin C tablet!

People just done realise that taking vitamin supplements is nowhere nearly as healthy as the real food. Each vitamin on the market can be taken in food form. So many believe the vitamin is the magic pill that will magically fix everything. What it will do is mess with your kidneys and liver. People were much healthier long ago, before these vitamins for every part of our anatomy were invented. These days, no matter how much vitamins one takes, we are always complaining about something or another, that is bothering our digestion, skin, ability to sleep and so on and so on. Eat foods that are considered healthy at the right time of day and save your kidneys, liver, money and peace of mind. 🙏🦋
