This article was kindly written for the SDC by member @Deejay11 . This week, Deb is back with another round of clever savings, tasty meals, and even a frugal-minded win that she scored without leaving bed! From smart surveys and entry form competitions to a cheesy crowd-pleaser from her kitchen, Deb continues to show how small habits can add up to meaningful wins. Don’t miss her practical tips, honest reflections, and recipe ideas below!

Hi again from @Deejay11

Has anyone had a go at entering competitions or surveys? Let me know if you have!

I’ve previously been a fan of IGA competitions, where you buy a product and complete an entry form. I’ve noticed lately that their competitions can still be entered this way, or you can just have your IGA Rewards Card scanned at the checkout during your purchase.

I can’t say (from a winner’s perspective 😊) I’m a fan of scanning Rewards Cards to win (Woolworths also do this often for competitions, with customers scanning their Everyday Rewards Card). It dramatically increases the number of entries, as people enter without even knowing about the competition or without knowing they have been entered!

It would be great to win in this way, but your chances of winning can be very much reduced (eg think Brand X frozen vegetables, and everyone with a Rewards Card has an entry for every pack of Brand X frozen vegetables they purchased over the competition period).

Over many years, I have never won a Woolworths competition by purchasing a product and scanning my Everyday Rewards Card. It’s very much the ‘luck of the draw’. Of course, you have to be in it to win it, but I wouldn’t personally spend a lot of money on products to enter such competitions.

I recently entered an IGA competition (I don’t have an IGA Rewards Card, so I entered through an entry form). I bought three products on separate receipts at half price for three entries. I’ll be stunned and amazed if I win anything!

I’m following on from my eighth edition (which you can read here):

Competitions:

Try your competition luck:

Enjoy winter 2025

Win one of five macadamia winter gift packs.

Ends 17/08/2025.

Taste the origins for your chance to win* | Nescafe® Australia

Win 1/200 $250 Coles eGift Cards by purchasing Nescafe Farmers Origins Coffee Capsules. Only one prize can be won (except SA residents), and multiple entries are permitted with separate receipts (one per receipt). Only one entry permitted per day.

Ends 02/09/2025.

Score a Luxe $340 Festival Banquet for Four at Olé - eat South Bank (Brisbane)

Ends 4pm 12/08/2025.

CLOSED: The Whisky Widow by Karen Brooks - 9781867227236 - Dymocks

Are you a member of Dymock’s Booklover? If you are, you can enter this competition.
It requires you to Pre-Order The Whisky Widow to go into the draw for a trip to Hobart.

Ends 04/08/2025.

Make sure you read the T&Cs for each competition. 😊

Surveys:

I’m still a fan of PrimeOpinion, which I covered earlier. On most weekends, I can withdraw $20 to put towards my weekly shop.

On Sunday, I withdrew my normal $20. On waking on Monday morning, the first survey I completed (10 minutes) paid nearly $3, then I completed the weekly draw for completing surveys 7 days in a row, and won nearly $4. Then I rolled over and went back to sleep! I’m confident I will be sitting at $20 again by next Sunday. 😊

Cooking:

I included a Bruschetta recipe for a visitor platter in my latest edition. The following recipe (which visitors love) keeps popping up on my Facebook feed, with many variations:

Ham & Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels

Ham-and-Cheese-Pinwheels-pic8.jpg
Freshly baked ham and cheese pinwheels—golden, cheesy, and perfect for sharing (or not)! Image source: Simply Scratch Made.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet thawed puff pastry
  • Thin ham slices to cover pastry
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (eg tasty, mozzarella, pizza 3 cheeses)
  • Egg wash
  • Optional: black pepper, chilli flakes, parsley, Dijon mustard, Everything Bagel Seasoning (bought, or make your own: Everything Bagel Seasoning Recipe | Coles)

Method:
  1. Lay puff pastry flat, cover with ham and cheese (and any other optional ingredients).
  2. Roll pastry firmly into a sausage, then cut into 1.5cm rounds. Place rounds onto a baking tray, lined with baking paper. Brush with beaten egg.
  3. Bake at 190 °C for about 20 minutes.

These are yummy!

I’m just taking a look at PrimeOpinion now, to claim my $20. After I click “Claim Reward” I scroll down to “Gift Cards (81)” which shows 2 Gift Cards, then says “View 79 more gift cards”. From this list, I usually choose Coles, but there are heaps of options. I’m guessing you haven’t gone into “Gift cards” but have scrolled further down and chosen “Pre Paid Cards (1)” and “Virtual Visa”. I just took a look at this, and the Visa cards appear to be in USD whereas the Gift Cards are in AUD. If you go to the Home Screen there is “More” in the bottom right corner, click on this, and choose “Help” and along with FAQ there is an “Ask Question” option in the middle of the screen. Send off a query re your card and how to use it, I sent a random query once and got a quick response! I hope this helps.

I wouldn't step into a price gouging IGA store if you held a gun to my head.

If you look closely at their "half price" specials, they quote Woolworths/Coles prices as the full price, then halve that.

Come the following Wednesday, when the full price is reinstated, it is not restored to match the original Woolworths/Coles price, but their own original price.

An example....

A well known simmer sauce sells for $5.00 at Woolworths/Coles. IGA has a half price special on that item for $2.50. At the end of the special period, the IGA price reverts to $5.40 not $5.00!

Don't get me started on their product misplacement to fool customers to purchase full priced products that are displayed in a half priced shelf!

Not good practice from IGA! My local IGA is a Cornetts, and they have their own specials on top of IGA specials. I rarely buy anything from my IGA unless it’s on special, and I’m happy to pay 1/2 Coles/Woolies price to enter a competition. Once products go back to “full price” I don’t buy them from IGA/ enter their comps. I always compare their prices with Coles/Woolies online before I buy any IGA item! I’ve always been surprised if I see people with loaded trolleys doing all their shopping at IGA.

We have a Good Grocers next door to us in Applecross, Perth, which are affiliated with IGA, have their catalogues in-store but don't always honour their specials. They might be open 24 hours a day but that doesn't give them licence to charge what they like.

Fancy paying $80 for a kilo of "French" lamb cutlets or $20 a kilo for chicken breast fillets! Does the word "French" render it something special, when it is "Produce of Australia?

And I see people walk out of there with full trolleys as well, amounting to the vicinity of $1000 worth! Then jump into their pretentious BMWs, Mercedes and Teslas.

My Cornetts/IGA is connected to IGA software, so specials come up automatically at the till. One day I was buying 1/4 cabbage, just to make a small one-night coleslaw. The operator had about 3 goes to enter it (she said IGA instructions were to enter a whole cabbage, then fiddle on the till to change it to 1/4 cabbage). She was so frustrated and then said “if their instructions are so useless, you get that for free”. I had to laugh!! I didn’t blame her.

You must be in Queensland having been a Cornett's IGA.

The best IGA by far was Cast's IGA at Bargara, near Bundaberg. Before a new Woolworths was built next door, his fresh produce was dirt cheap and good quality but lost customers for reasons unknown in the early 2010s.

Whole rump and chicken breast fillets for $4.99 a kilo, chicken drumsticks and wings for $1.99, how could you go wrong?

I do surveys with Prime Opinion, Pure Profile, Live Tribe, Life Points, Purple Patch and Ipsos. Prime Opinion is the easiest to redeem from - I get mine put into PayPal and use that money for craft supplies. Most of them have PayPal, but Pure Profile and Live Tribe give a choice of that, gift cards or direct cash deposits. I average about $30 month from Pure Profile, and $20 from Prime Opinion every couple of weeks.

Great to hear! The $$’s do add up, and it’s worthwhile, particularly in these expensive times.

I entered a woolworths competition without realising it by buying the product required and swiping my rewards card as I always do. Months later I got an email saying I had won one of 200 air fryers. i thought scam scam scam. But then remembered I had bought that product often and just had to confirm my delivery address. Thought I"ll just wait and see. Sure enough weeks later up turned a very nice air fryer. Just goes to show. Pity Lotto doesn"t work the same way

That is so cool that you won an Air Fryer! But it makes you wonder how many people would delete their winning email, when they have no idea they have entered. It’s good that you didn’t hit DELETE.
