It takes 10 minutes a day—but it could save you $260 at the grocery checkout

A young woman has uncovered a surprisingly simple trick to slash her grocery bills—without extreme budgeting or coupon clipping.

She managed to walk away with $279 worth of groceries from Woolworths and paid just $16 in cash.

The secret? It’s something many of us already do while sipping our morning coffee.

Bec Jane, 24, had been feeling the pressure of rising grocery prices, just like many other Australians battling through the cost-of-living crisis.

Living with her partner, she noticed the weekly food bill creeping up—so she decided to turn her phone time into something productive.

Instead of scrolling through social media first thing in the morning or while watching TV, she began completing paid online surveys.

‘I’m doing surveys at 5am when I wake up and I’m having my coffee instead of scrolling TikTok or Instagram, which we’re all guilty of … And then just at night when I’m literally just scrolling on my phone and I’ve got the TV on,’ she said.

She primarily used Octopus and Pure Profile but noted there were plenty of other options available.

The surveys typically took between 5 to 10 minutes and paid anywhere from $1 to $8, depending on the platform and length.

Jane said she initially cashed out her earnings directly to her bank account.

But everything changed when she discovered she could convert her survey balance into gift cards—including for Woolworths.

‘As your balance builds, you can then either choose to cash out directly to your bank account, which I was doing until I found out that you can actually cash out into gift cards,’ she said.

‘I was like, well, this could be a good way to do my grocery budget every week.’

Over the past two weeks, Jane earned $250 in Woolworths gift cards using just online surveys.

She also took advantage of the supermarket’s Every Extra program, which gives her 10 per cent off one grocery shop per month.

Thanks to the combination of survey earnings and her monthly discount, Jane brought the total cost of her latest Woolworths haul down from $279 to just $16.

She said online surveys offered a simple way to earn a bit of extra cash and could fit easily into anyone’s routine.

To get started, users typically needed to share demographic details such as age, gender, and location, which allowed platforms to match them with relevant surveys.

Payments usually came in the form of cash via PayPal or store gift cards.

Pure Profile also partnered with Flybuys, enabling users to earn points for each survey completed.

The data collected through the surveys were often used by companies for marketing and research purposes.

If you’re curious about how others are keeping grocery costs down without sacrificing essentials, there’s more inspiration to be found.

One household shared how simple planning, smart habits, and a bit of creativity made a big difference to their weekly food spend.

It’s a different approach—but the same goal: spending less without feeling like you’re missing out.

I do surveys too on several panels and keep the earnings until near Christmas when I get vouchers or cards to buy presents. Usually totalling around $500.
I also save up all the Flybuys I get from shopping at Coles and affiliated stores plus by using my Coles MasterCard to pay bills, buy almost everything and pay it off each month so no interest charged, I accumulate around $700 in Flybuy dollars. As a pensioner it is a wonderful way to earn extra money and I can lash out on gifts and food for Christmas.
I cannot understand why others do not do this. I must have saved and earned thousands over the years.

Yep, exactly what I do, but I’d avoid paying $14 for bags and delivery

I save a fair bit with flybuys dollars but use it as I go as I don't trust them not to stop it at a dropvof a hat so if I saved it up until the end of the year and they decided to change or stop and I lost the dollars I had saved I would not be happy. Would sooner use as I go to ensure full benefit. I don't trust any of these places as they have changed their minds and how they work before. If I have earnt it I would prefer to have the benefit, it is still a saving during the year so suits me.

I don't recall any cases where you lost points when stores changed their plans.
Usually previously accumulated points
are rolled over into their new plan

Yes both my husband and I do the surveys and save to gift cards for Woolworths and bank as well. Definitely helps the budget. I average around $140 month on Pureprofile. Husband had $180 in gift cards. 🩷

Download the Pureprofile App from Google play or Apple on your phone and surveys get sent to you. Cash in at $20 to bank or $20 giftcards

I was doing four surveys, including Pure Profile, for over ten years. I enjoyed doing the surveys so much that I never claimed a voucher in all that time. Last year, due to ill health, I decide to ask for the money I had in my account I was owed over $2,500. They put me through ABSOLUTE hell trying to get them to pay me MY rewards money. For over six months I was subjected to lies, told that my emails to them never arrived, they ignored four snail mail letters...it just went on and on until I was physically sick. When I finally mentioned Consumer Affairs, Channel 9's 'A Current Affair', and the Trade Practices Commission, suddenly the money went into my bank account. Even writing letters to the head office in the U.S. were ignored. To anyone who is thinking of doing on-line surveys...DO NOT DO THEM IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.

I certainly won't I can't stand doing reviews.

I used to do surveys many years ago, but as soon as I’d start, I’d think of something else I should be doing.

I also don’t like doing reviews unless there’s been something exceptional. I do feel good about giving positive feedback when deserved.

But for the most part, it’s so tedious getting emails asking for reviews every time I order or buy items.

The heading is misleading “it takes 10 minutes a day”. I can honestly say you won’t make much money if you just complete surveys for 10 minutes a day.

I subscribe to various platforms as well. Also am a regular participant in Focus Groups, which can pay handsomely depending on the subject topic and duration of the activity .... 😉

I do the odd survey but when they ask inane questions I usually back out as I cannot be bothered with rubbish questions. I only want to do a survey that has a few questions.
