I love to read stories about senior people like me . My 2 sisters were 17 and 14 years older than me and had left home and gone to the big smoke to work when I was born . My mother was 45 years old and my father 48 so I was change of life baby . My Aunty whom had great sense of humour said I was strained thru the sheets!!😊They used to milk cows by hand then no machines .grew small fruit apple orchard etc . It was a farming area and there was quite some distance between neighbours no children for me to go and play with . The only friends I had was when iwent to school . 3 MILES I walked down Hill to catch the school bus and the same at night UPHILL . In the winter time frost it would be dark when I left and nearly dark when I got home . Even though my father had an old Ford single seaterWhatever he never came to pick us up my mother couldn’t drive but if it was POURING with rain she would walk the 3 miles to the bus and bring an umbers . I had to work on the farm especially in fruit picking season . I loved the animals we had 3 dogs 2 cats chooks ducks and the baby calves i used to feed ,they were never sent to slaughter like they are now . They were all raised and sold later when they were fully grown . I live on my own now and I wouldn’t have it any other way . People say to me Don’t you get lonely living on your own ? My reply is I enjoy my own company I can amuse myself quite easily there are not enough hours in the day for me to do what I want to do ! When I read of these people on strong antidepressant tablets ,mental health problems bad up bringing etc Too much time on their hands and nothing to do . I support JACKIE LAMBIE when she says bring back National Service at 18 my husband had to do it and he reckons best thing he ever did straightened him up as his father left his mother to raise 5 boys on her own and he was in with the wrong crowd.

What a great story. My eldest is 47 and my youngest is 21 but there are another 11 between them. I have always found the older ones were always very protective of the younger ones

My family were well spaced out, two siblings were born before the war, then the next 3 of us came along. My closest in age sister is 4 yrs. older than me & my brother is 8 yrs. younger, so my sister & I generally had no one else to play with, which made for a rather lonely childhood. We also lived on a farm so had to catch a bus to school, which was an ordeal at times, as the bus constantly broke down. It would have been so much easier if mum had been able to drive. Life was a little easier for my brother as a family with children his age, came to work on the farm. We did learn to be resilient & are all prolific readers, I still love to curl up with a book. My brother & sister are still rather quiet & reserved, whereas I’ll talk to anyone. I don’t mind my own company but could never move back to a country area. A reasonably sized country town, with lots of shops might be okay, but a city is much better. I do miss my two oldest siblings so much, the three of us were so alike, even with 11 & 13 years between us.

My sister was nine and a half years older than me and my brother was two years older than me. My brother and I never got on and always squabbled as my mother always favoured him over us two girls as she had always wanted a son. My sister and I were very good together and we both loved our father to death.
