Corner Shop

Remember shops like this? The local corner store was more than just a place to grab the basics—it was part of the neighbourhood. Fly-wire doors, the ding of a bell as you walked in, and a friendly face ready to help behind the counter.

I can't remember the name of the owners but so many things I do remember like home made iceblocks for a penny, a bag of broken biscuits for threepence, the smiles of the staff and occasional hugs and Mum always treated like a queen. The shop was on Lane Cove Road at Ryde but, of course is long gone.

I certainly do remember corner shops like this. There was one just one block away from where I grew up, so you can imagine every afternoon on the way home from school. I would call in and get a couple of lollies. And in summer there was always a walk up to the shop to get an ice cream. What a treat.

I remember visiting my grandmother's home regularly. She would always get us to go to the shop for her to get some cold meat and bread for our sandwiches and a bag of lollies. She would wait at the front gate for us (the shop was only six houses away). Mrs Adams, the shop keeper, would always great us by name and after we had made our purchase she would come out and wave to my grandmother as we walked back. We felt so grown up that we could go shopping and do it by ourselves. A simpler life with so many good memories. Thank you for this as it has brought back memories of happy days as a child.

Yes just round the corner from us .Mum was a friend of the two elderly ladies that owned the shop and we went there every week in the evenings to play cards whist poker etc

When I was a child in England the corner shop was called Honeysett's and Mr Honeysett was a lovely old chap who measured and cut etc everything you needed such as weighing lollies (yum) and cutting cheese etc. People patiently queued and chatted to each other while waiting for their turn. No rush and of course we always took our shopping bag or basket with us. (we were ahead in those days and also recycled a lot more things) We also had home delivery for groceries, bread, milk etc
