New blindness cases link popular weight loss injections to vision risk

In recent years, weight loss injections like Ozempic and Wegovy have become household names, especially among Australians seeking to manage type 2 diabetes or shed stubborn kilos.

But as their popularity soars, so too do concerns about their safety—particularly when it comes to your eyesight.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia’s medicine watchdog, has received more than 40 reports of eye disorders potentially linked to these medications since December 2020.

Most concerningly, at least ten cases involved sudden blindness or significant vision loss.

Eight of these were outright complaints of blindness, while two others described sudden loss of sight in one eye.

These reports have sparked alarm among both patients and health professionals, especially as many users are reluctant to stop the injections for fear of regaining lost weight.

The active ingredient in both Ozempic and Wegovy is semaglutide, a medication originally developed to help manage type 2 diabetes.

However, it’s now widely prescribed 'off-label' for weight loss—even though it’s not officially approved for that purpose in Australia.

Recent research, including a study published in the respected JAMA Ophthalmology journal, suggests a possible connection between semaglutide and a rare but serious eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), sometimes referred to as an 'eye stroke.'

This condition occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced, causing swelling, damage, and in some cases, permanent vision loss.

One particularly striking case involved a woman in her 50s who temporarily lost vision in one eye just a day after her first semaglutide injection.

Her sight returned after stopping the medication, but when she resumed treatment, she lost vision in the other eye.

Many users have taken to social media to share their experiences.

One Wegovy user described persistent eye soreness and blurry vision upon waking, saying, 'I don’t want to come off Wegovy. I don’t want to put the weight back on.'

Another recounted regaining weight after stopping their medication due to side effects, highlighting the difficult trade-offs many face.

Of the 40+ eye-related complaints, 19 were from Ozempic users, two from Wegovy, and the rest from people using similar drugs under different names.

The TGA is taking these reports seriously and is investigating and reviewing Australian and international data.

They’ve acknowledged the JAMA Ophthalmology report and are working to determine whether there’s a direct link between semaglutide and these eye conditions.

It’s important to note that people with diabetes are already at higher risk for certain eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema.

This makes it even more crucial for anyone on these medications to monitor their eye health closely.

Dr Gary Deed, chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ diabetes interest network, stresses the importance of regular, face-to-face check-ups with your GP if you take GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic or Wegovy.

'While online services have made it easier to access these medications, there’s no substitute for a GP who knows your history and can monitor for side effects,' Dr Deed says.

'If you notice any changes in your vision, inform your doctor immediately.'

If you’re using these medications, there’s no need to panic, but it’s important to stay alert.

Treat any sudden changes in vision—such as blurriness, pain, or loss of sight—as a medical emergency. Make sure to keep your GP informed and attend regular check-ups, especially if you have diabetes or other risk factors for eye disease.

Report any unusual symptoms to your doctor and the TGA to help track potential risks.

Most importantly, never stop your medication without first consulting your doctor.

For many, Ozempic and Wegovy have been life-changing, helping to manage blood sugar and achieve significant weight loss.

But as with any medication, it’s important to weigh the benefits against the risks—and to make decisions in partnership with a trusted healthcare professional.

A female family member who is on Ozempic has lost so much weight that she looks absolutely unhealthy. Her hair has become so thin and she is so irratable always. The Ozembic was prescribed to her not to lose weight, but for the reason because she is a type 1 Diabetic and her doctor said the Ozempic would keep her blood glucose at a stable level. She has stated many times that since taking the Ozempic, her blood glucose is more stable. Now, I don't know whether to tell her that since she began taking the Ozempic, she has become too thin and looks like she has aged and her hair is so thin, or should I let her be, because it is keeping her blood glucose more level. Her doctor seems to be oblivious to the way her appearance has been affected by the Ozempic. 🙏🦋

Wasn't the primary reason for the development of Ozempic and Wegovy was for blood sugar level control in Type 2 Diabetes?

Now there is a secondary "benefit" as a weight loss agent. What I would like to know is the incidence of eyesight issues experienced by those using these medications for Type 2 Diabetes versus those who use it for weight loss. Dosage levels must come into consideration. It would be expected that the higher the dose, the greater the risk.

the ones using this are FAT. It is for Diabetics.

There is no magic wand to loose weight. This came out as the miracle drug to loose weight. Of course there is going to be side effects. This is a pretty serious side effect. If the medical system and some people would just get off over weight people's backs and stop making us feel like every health issue we have is due to weight or because some people are overweight we are made to feel like we are not healthy or as attractive as a thinner person we could just accept some of us will never be thin.
As long as you look after yourself and exercise even if it's just a daily walk and do the best you can to stay healthy leave these drugs for the people who need for legitimate health needs.
After spending heaps of money on these drugs loosing the weight sad to say most people put the weight back on. Acceptance would help a lot of us over weight people.
No matter your size remember you are unique and awesome.
Kind regards to all Vicki

Best to say nothing. If your friend has lost weight she most likely thinks she looks wonderful. Poor darling. Yes she would be irritable as when you are loosing weight and not meant to you became very miserable and l found very cold. I am sure a good dietitian could help her with her type 1 diabetes. Instead of these drugs.
I do wonder about the dr's sometimes.
Interesting story on Insight last night about invisible illness. Which l could relate to. Even a Dr who was talking said. Most of the GPs have no idea what to do for people with invisible illness. A lot of people are told it's all in your head. I get told if you could loose some weight. My body problems are not invisible but l am sick of being judged because of my weight. Not everyone is meant to be slim. I am very lucky l don't have weight issue illness.
Just love and support your friend.
Kind regards Vicki

It's very common for people to appear older-looking when losing weight, especially if it's achieved too fast.
As a result, the excess stretched skin that remains is usually saggy and very wrinkled, giving an appearance of aging. Hair loss can also be caused by shock to the system due to dieting too much or too fast.
Remind her that it at least improved her sugar levels, which is more important anyway!

Dear member BellaB18, my friend is taking the Ozempic for the purpose of keeping her Type 1 diabetes blood sugar level more stable. Keeping blood glucose stable is what every Type1 Diabetic must try and do. She is not taking it to lose weight. I don't think that her loss of weight and thining of hair can out weigh the joy of keeping her blood glucose more stable.
My concern is that even though the Ozempic is keeping her blood sugar level more stable, the side affects are not fair, she is losing weight and she doesn't want to lose weight, but this is what Ozempic is doing to her body. She just wants to be able to keep her blood sugar level stable. So what does one do, take the Ozempic to keep blood glucose level in place and keep losing weight and losing hair OR, stop taking Ozempic and keep your healthy weight and healthy hair and struggle with keeping your blood glucose in a level state. I think the the Ozempic is 'a wolf dressed as a sheep' , too many side affects that people are not taking seriously. Soon we will need a medicine to deal with the side affects of Ozempic, only because it is only a new product on the market. So basically, who ever is taking the ozempic now, may sadly find down the years, some undesirable health issues have developed.🙏🦋

There is so much pressure to loose weight, look at all the so called beautiful people, I haven`t seen many who are overweight. Glossy woman`s magazines highlight slim glamourous ladies and men on their pages. I shows you how desperate some people are to loose weight, when there are so many possible serious side effects. It was developed to help people with diabetes. We should be changing our mindset regarding FAT versus SLIM because I think there is a real stigma against people who are over weight, why cannot we accept each other for our differences and stop the judgment.

I think people have been brain washed by the media and big money making companies to believe that being skinny is beautiful. This most probably all comes from the big business people who want to sell their, diet pill, their gym equipment, their diet books, their fashionable clothes, water sports jet skies, swim wear, men's and women's fragrances and so on. Every advertisment advertising a product is linked to a slim young man or slim young lady. Almost to say, we only cater for slim people.
Just look at people in the media, talk shows, magazines, celebrities, models. It's like they nibble on small portions of food so that they don't lose their jobs. There is so many competitive people out there looking for the top position in their choice of career.
So what happens when two candidates or applications, have an absolutely similar resume but, one of the applicants is slightly over weight. In the media and in high-profile careers, without a doubt, and sadly, the overweight applicant will come in second best, and the slim aplicant will rise and shine. And so is it any wonder that the Ozempic has become in great demand, as a world wide choice of easy method to lose weight. And, clearly the slim and slender look appears to out weigh all the dangerously side affects that come with this ' LITTLE MAGIC GEM OZEMPIC ' as many users call it. 🙏🦋
