‘False impression’: National icon accuses broadcaster of crossing the line

Disputes between national institutions and the media can often stir up passionate debate—especially when they involve matters of remembrance, respect, and public trust.

A recent broadcast by a leading current affairs program has come under scrutiny, prompting strong reactions and formal complaints from one of Australia's most significant cultural sites.

Here’s what happened next.

A recent Four Corners episode has prompted backlash from the Australian War Memorial, which accused the ABC of misleading the public over its daily Last Post Ceremony.

The episode, titled ‘Sacrifice’, aired on 10 March and explored the controversy surrounding a $500million redevelopment of the Canberra memorial initiated under former prime minister Scott Morrison.

During the broadcast, reporter Mark Willacy described the memorial as ‘a battleground fought over by those who want it to expand and evolve, and by those who warn that it’s being turned into a half-a-billion-dollar military theme park that celebrates, rather than commemorates war.’

A segment of the program included audio of the Last Post playing at 4:30 pm while a B-roll of noisy construction activity appeared on screen.

Willacy added:‘This place of commemoration is also a construction site.’

Memorial Director Matt Anderson PSM challenged the portrayal, saying it gave ‘the false impression’ that construction disrupted the solemn ceremony.

Mr Anderson said: ‘There was no construction teams working on the day the Last Post Ceremony was filmed by Four Corners as it was Remembrance Day.’

He stated that the memorial has enforced a stop-work order since 2020 to ensure ceremonies remain undisturbed.

He also said: ‘The Australian War Memorial has had a stop work order since 2020 to prevent construction noise from disrupting commemorative ceremonies including the daily Last Post Ceremony.’

Mr Anderson confirmed that a formal complaint had been sent to ABC chairman Kim Williams over what he called ‘the misrepresentation of staff and activities.’

He noted the issue with the Last Post audio was just ‘one of several complaints we have asked to be investigated.’

Although Four Corners had permission to film over several months, the Last Post segment was captured on 11 November 2024.

An ABC spokesperson defended the segment, saying there was no claim that construction and the ceremony took place simultaneously.

‘There is no implication in the program that the ceremony and the construction are occurring simultaneously,’ the spokesperson said.

‘There is a clear break in scene between the ceremony and the footage of the construction site.’

‘Both the ceremony and the Last Post are presented respectfully and in context.’

This was not the first time the broadcaster faced criticism over its reporting on military matters.

In 2022, Channel Seven’s Spotlight program accused the ABC of editing audio in a story by Willacy that depicted Australian soldiers during an operation in Afghanistan.

The segment reportedly featured misleading sound effects added to helmet cam footage, making it appear as if multiple gunshots were fired at villagers.

An audio expert found at least five shots were inserted, although the footage supposedly showed only a single warning shot.

Former Special Forces Commander Heston Russell, who featured in the clip, later won a defamation case against the ABC.

The broadcaster removed the video, citing an ‘editing error.’

At the time, ABC News said, ‘has no evidence that reporter Mark Willacy directed anyone to change the audio on the (helicopter) video and to imply otherwise is false.’

It also said: ‘Mark Willacy categorically denies any allegation that he directed or authorised any change to the audio in his story.’

Why is Mark Willacy even still employed with the ABC. If you fabricated a story like he did with a war hero (Heston Russel) amending shots fired in a story to bring down a soldier with any other station like Nine, 10 or Skynews he would never work again in that industry. ABC has no morals any more. I just subscribe to the ABC by force Via my Taxes.

Why let the truth ruin a good story - the ABC has been a left leaning bin of loonies since the 70's when Whitlam gave them credence. The fact that they commemorate 11th November as the day Whitlam was turfed out of office (with good reason) and not remembering the fallen soldiers as part of Remembrance Day is enough for me. Cut off their funding - if they want to spruik their rubbish and continue to employ this supposed reporter (try "creator of his own imagination") then the whole news and current affairs section and include the GM, should be given their marching orders.

This is nothing to do with this article but is anyone else having a problem needing to log in every day then it won't accept my log in and I have to reset. Until I do this I cannot do anything on the SDC page apart from games. It has been going on for a few days now and is very frustrating.
I frequently have to go back and log in but my details come up as soon as I hit log in.

I have visited the 'special afternoon services' at the Memorial on at least 3 occasions. They were professionally run, well presented with the utmost display of reverence. I did not hear any 'perifferal noise' during the Service, certainly not what this 'journo referred to.' The ABC has become the 'standard' for distorted reporting of news for a number of years now, they show-boat their left/right wing reporters who add to, modify and remove any part that they seem fit. Honesty and been replaced with a 'make it more dramatic' attitude. They are not alone, the other channels, media forms have followed suit.... I laugh at the reporting of the 'war between Ukraine and Russia', what war, there has been no 'declaration of War, what it is, is the unlawful invasion of one country into another country. 'War sounds more dramatic and it fits nicely in the centre of the front page of the papers. Successive Gov.'s have allowed the ABC to 'do/say what it likes' to make it sound like they are not politically aligned to any one party. They have unlimited public money for a budget and they deal out all the 'dribble under the sun'. I had a mate who worked there for a few years, he left after seeing articles that he had written, re-written, torn apart, distorted, added to or parts deleted however, they alway got his name correct as the 'reporter covering/filing the story. So if there was any back-lash the boffins at the top would offer up a 'sacrificial lamb' to take the fall ie: the reporter. Who can recall the last 5 heads of the ABC, before Ita.... they took their large part of the public money cake and faded away into oblivion....it is just a 'black hole' where public money disappears into it.... glad to see Easter has finished, 12 months before I eat chocolate again....cheers.
