Who remembers the usherettes at picture theatres? Dressed in smart uniforms, they collected tickets and guided you to your seat with a torch when the lights went down. They were a big part of the movie experience back in the day. Members, share your fond memories here.

So were the ice cream boys. Racing from one theatre to another especially in the city. A tray loaded with ice cream usually drumsticks. It meant you didn’t need to leave your seat at interval if you didn’t want to. My husband did that as a second job in the evenings and on Saturday.

yes, and in those days you could go in at any time, even halfway through the movie, and you could sit there and watch a couple of movies and cartoons and the newsreel. when it came to the part where you had walked in you could either leave or sit there and watch the whole show all over again.

Reactions: Face-to-face
My mother told me her times as an Usherette in Melbourne and Alwin Kurts (the inspector in Homicide in the late 60's) was the Spruiker outside the theatre trying to get people to watch a movie. She said she went on a couple of dates but the relationship didn’t continue.
