Shocking photos reveal how your dream holiday home could get destroyed!

As we age, we often look forward to the tranquillity of a well-deserved holiday, perhaps in a charming rental that promises a touch of magic and nostalgia. Imagine, then, the horror of returning to your beloved holiday home only to find it in ruins, the victim of reckless destruction. This nightmare scenario became a reality for Sadie, a British holiday rental owner whose Harry Potter themed haven was left in shambles by guests who seemed to confuse destructive mischief with the mischievous charm of the fictional world it celebrated.

The damage inflicted upon Sadie's property is not just a tale of broken objects; it's a story of broken trust and a stark reminder of the vulnerability homeowners face in the holiday rental market. The guests, who booked a one-night stay for two adults through Booking.com, left behind a scene of devastation with damages exceeding A$10,000. The aftermath was not just a financial blow but an emotional one, as Sadie and her brother, who co-owns the rental, were left 'traumatised' by the extent of the vandalism.

The vandals spared no corner of the enchanting abode. A mattress stained with cocoa and coffee, a shattered sofa bed, and a destroyed TV were just the beginning. The bedding was drenched, walls, blinds, carpets, and radiators were splattered with orange soft drink, and the Harry Potter-themed mugs and glasses were smashed to pieces on the floor. This wanton destruction forced Sadie to close the rental indefinitely, a decision that no doubt weighs heavily on her heart and her finances.

For many of us over 60, the idea of opening our homes to strangers as a holiday rental can be an appealing way to earn extra income, especially in retirement. However, Sadie's ordeal is a stark reminder of the risks involved. It's essential to consider safeguards such as insurance, security deposits, and thorough vetting of potential guests. Moreover, it's crucial to understand the support systems provided by booking platforms in such distressing situations.

Booking.com, the platform through which the booking was made, has stated that they 'do not tolerate destructive behaviour' and expressed regret over the damage. They urged Sadie to report the misconduct and reach out to their customer services team to initiate a thorough investigation, cooperate with local authorities, and potentially block the responsible customers from their platform.

This incident raises important questions for all of us considering entering the holiday rental market. How can we protect our properties from such devastation? What measures can booking platforms implement to ensure homeowners are not left to shoulder the burden of damages alone? And how can we, as a community, support those who have experienced such violations of their personal and financial sanctuaries?

This is exactly why my husband and I who own our four-bedroom home outright will not take in any person. These days, no matter how many ‘good’ referrals one may be presented with by a ‘rental tenant’, one never knows if we might wake up the next morning and find our precious memories and possessions trashed or stolen and the ‘tenant’ gone with everything. My heart goes out to the less fortunate and those in need but . . . . Might seem very selfish but there’s always that big ‘BUT’ .

I have spent six years being a cleaner at these properties and I would never let my property as a holiday let. As in everything in life there is good and bad.
These booking agencies are owned mostly in America and Netherlands and some other countries so obviously no taxes paid in Australia so remember Trump tariffs.
The booking website gave a minimal limit on a bond claim and the cleaners have to supply photos of the damage and an estimate bond claim and from my experience 95% of the claims are declined by the booking agency as being excessive. The perpetrators know the system and they cancel their credit card bond hold once they arrive at the property. The booking agent has got their money so why should they care.
The cleaners are the ones who have to face this and on many occasions have turned up at the property and have had to deal with the ugly perpetrators and the abuse and threats from these disgusting people. The high living members of Society are the worst.
If you want to have a rental property get long term tenants. At least there is Australians standards and Australian rules and governing bodies.

This happened to us when we rented out our home while we were overseas. We returned to find our place trashed despite regular condition reports from the rental agency to say that every thing was fine. We couldn't move into the house for two weeks because of the stench left by the tenants. Every inch of every wall had to be scrubbed down as well as ceilings in the living area (slimy nicotine residue). Carpets throughout the house were completely ruined with bright red stains, every appliance was wrecked, cast iron metal taps broken off, the ducted vacuum system completely blocked with children's sweets, holes punched in walks and crudely patched, blinds torn and the garden completely dead. Trust agents, never again. Run a rental, never again.

My Brother and I rented out our deceased parents home through an agent who was responsible for checking the condition of the home every month and it all started okay when 4 young working lads rented the home however after about 6 months two of the lads left and another two came in and that's when things went down hill and it started a revolving door effect . Yes the new changed tenants had great references by rental agents that wanted them gone out of the rental properties they had rented previously. We eventually ended up with a call girl renting but in the mean time $10,000 dollars of damage ( 1994) and a judgement from the rental tribunal that was in favour of the renters, while we removed 2 truckloads of rubbish and had to repaint the house for a second time in 2 years. Yes the Call girl did keep the house clean but the neighbours weren't happy with the comings and goings. Fair to say we gave up and sold the house, never to be involved in renting again.

WOW. I hope you got some compensation back from the Agency for not forfilling their contract. That's disgusting.

We’re the same Catherine, though we do have my brother living with us. There are so many disturbing stories about people taking others in & coming to a sticky end. We actually don’t find the house too big for us so think we’ll just stay here & have room to spread out.
We have rented a couple of times throughout our lives & have always looked after the properties better than our own.

The one thing I prided myself by leaving a rental better than I found it.
Same here . We were on our honeymoon 1955 on our way to Wales and had just been refused lodgings because this woman at the desk thought we were not married .We eventually found a B &B in Coventry UK and as we were having breakfast we were trusted to lock up the house for her as she had to go to work which we were happy to do.

Typical of some snotty nosed "elites".

In 1983, I was supposed to attend a meeting at the King's Head Tavern at South Hurstville regarding a group skiing tour to New Zealand. When I entered, this pompous Pommie git with his chin sticking out, told me "We don't allow the likes of you in our establishment!" All because I was wearing a leather jacket and was holding a motorcycle helmet.

If this prick was still alive, his ears would be still burning from the tirade of the most extreme expletives know to man.

People who think they are above everybody else should be brought down a peg or ten, preferably on their arse!
