Smooth like butter? Recent changes in one famous ALDI product outrages shoppers

In the world of grocery shopping, product consistency is key.

When we find a product we love, we stick to it through thick and thin.

Yet, what happens when a beloved pantry staple goes through a not-so-subtle change?

Several ALDI shoppers recently faced a conundrum that left them with a bad taste in their mouths.

The subject of their ire? A sudden change to ALDI's famous crunchy peanut butter.

A mum sounded the alarm after her latest purchase of the crunchy spread did not quite spread the joy she was accustomed to.

'The crunchy peanut butter is a staple in our house, but our new one was not as smooth or sweet this morning,' she wrote in her post.

Upon closer inspection, she noticed several changes in the product.

Here are some changes she pointed out:
  • It had a different container.
  • It is made in India instead of Argentina.
  • The new formula has Palm Oil instead of Palm Fat.
  • It now has a higher percentage of peanuts.

While some of these changes seem positive at first glance, the overall consensus was that the new recipe did not stack up to the old.

'I am going to email ALDI our feedback that it's not as nice of a product, and we will be returning it,' the mum declared.

'I wanted to give a heads up to others as the label artwork is still the same, so we didn't notice it had changed until we tasted it.'

Other shoppers also shared their disappointment about the changes in the product.

'I agree, it is nowhere near as nice as the original one they had,' one wrote.

'We took ours back for a refund as we had bought a few jars, and they refunded them all without any issue,' another shared.

'I imagine they have had a few complaints.'

The conversation quickly turned to the perplexing nature of the changes.

'It should be better. More percentage of peanuts mean less percentage of other stuff?' a curious shopper asked.

'Palm fat and palm oil are the same. By the way, peanuts have their own oil. Why are they adding palm oil? It does not sound good,' the shopper added.

'Such a shame as we now need to start the process of finding a new crunchy peanut butter. Any recommendations?' a dismayed shopper commented.

Some shoppers suggested ALDI's American Style Peanut Butter. However, whispers of its potential discontinuation added to the shoppers' woes.

'We liked the American peanut butter from ALDI, but I have not seen it in ages. Most other brands are too dry for my liking,' someone shared.

'My kids and hubby like the one from Costco. Skippy, I think. I prefer the Mayvers from Woolies,' another shared their varied preferences.

'I like the Pics or Mayvers, but my daughter loves Sanitarium Crunchy or Skippy Extra Crunchy,' a third suggested.

However, last December, Sanitarium recently ceased production of its peanut butter products.

The decision marked an end to their century-long operations.

ALDI's peanut butter predicament is a reminder that even the most minor changes could have a significant impact on consumer loyalty.

Dick Smith's Peanut Butter was the best I have tasted, but Woolies crucified it by putting it on the very bottom shelf where not many people could see it and a lot could not bend that far. Is everybody aware that Woolies charge their suppliers for shelf space? It is a lucrative side hustle.

This has been going on for years and is very common in most supermarkets

Our granddaughter who has special needs and is picky with food really loved the ALDI fried chicken. She would not eat KFC only the ALDI one. However they have changed the packaging and the formula of the coating. The pieces are far too large and all the coating comes off when cooking. We can no longer use it.

they are pretty easy to cook at home and recipes are a dime a dozen.

I suspect it's a Contract thing. They appear to Contract a supplier for 1-2 years and then change the supplier.
I was getting some Low Carb bread from my ALDI in WA, it was surprisingly the nicest bread I'd tasted in many years. Last year it changed, there's no comparison so now I won't buy their current Low Carb bread, and will travel to a Coles or IGA store to purchase LC bread which is still not as nice as the original. I've noted changed suppliers on quite a few other ALDI products too.
Another issue they had was their 1kg block of Cheese, it went mouldy within 1-2 weeks of purchase, even if the packet was not opened. I had several refunded/replaced. Went online and read reviews about the Westacre cheese, I was not alone by a long shot, there were many bad reviews! Note it hasn't happened this last 8-9 months though, so they must have addressed the issue. (Change supplier or instigate remedy).

It is a typical thing these days. You find something you really like and it is available for quite some time, then they either mess with it or take it off the market. You do have to wonder where their brains are 🤔
Like Arnotts biscuits taking away my all time favourite dipping bikkie the custard creams.
Woolies has their own brand for 90cents a packet but they are disgusting :(

Take note - the cheap brands do not pay as much are gaining sales for a new product so they go in less obvious places. It has been happening in the grocery trade since the 1970s that I know of. I worked in the trade for 40 years until 2009.
