'It doesn't work that way': This beach trend is making waves for the wrong reasons!

Australia is renowned for its stunning beaches that locals and tourists love to bask in.

However, a new trend started causing a stir along the coastlines, and it's not about the latest swimwear fashion or surfboard design.

This trend sparked a national debate about Aussie beach etiquette.

Aussie beachgoers started using Glad Wrap to claim public gazebos and cabanas at the beach.

The recent practice has become so prevalent that it prompted Wollongong's council to take action against it.

Signs discouraging the act have been spotted on Cliff Road in North Wollongong, just south of Sydney.

The signage read, 'This is a shared public space. The use of cling wrap or any material to enclose picnic shelters is prohibited.'

The Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Tania Brown, expressed her disappointment about the action, which prompted the installation of said signages.

Rangers have also been instructed to remove any wrapping found in public gazebos.

This controversy came on the heels of NSW Premier Chris Minns laying down new 'rules' about portable cabanas on Australia's beaches.

The debate centred on whether it's appropriate to use cabanas to reserve spots on the shoreline.

'You can't put a peg in the ground and claim the land is yours with the cabana like Richard Nixon did with the moon,' Premier Minns said.

'It doesn't work that way. You can't just stick a cabana up and lay claim to it.'

He went on to outline his 'rules' for cabana use, which include having at least one person present at the site.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also weighed in on the cabana controversy.

In one of his appearances on Today, the Prime Minister stated that hogging beach space with cabanas was 'not on' and went against Australia's values.

Online content creator Miss Double Bay proposed a 'solution to the cabana epidemic'.

She suggested creating 'Cabana Corners'—designated areas on the beach where cabanas are allowed.

These 'Cabana Corners' are then reinforced with parking metres.

Fines should also be implemented for beachgoers who set their cabanas up outside these zones.

Her proposal sparked conversation and debate among beachgoers and council members alike.

Many agreed with her idea of maintaining the open, shared nature of Australia's beaches.

The problem is when families go to the beach they should be able to put cabanas up as it creates shade. This is an important issue. Especially when protecting children from the sun.

Going to the beach is so Australian and it is free!!!

All the advertising about the importance of covering up and staying out of sun!!!

We all know beaches are for all the public.

No one should be using gladwrap - that seems selfish.

Parking "metres"? But then, again, she is only an "influencer". If she used that word, it just goes to show ...

Had to have her photo in the article!! What utter rot she speaks. Just a bit of common sense is required. It's not as if there is a shortage of beaches in Oz - arrive, put up your umbrella, cabana etc. lay out your towel/blanket, grab your eskies and sit down & enjoy! Why the big issue?

Surely the issue here is that our beaches are not to become "parking areas" as they have overseas, with serried ranks of cabanas with barely enough room to walk sideways between them. Her use of "parking metres" and "police", apart from the mistake, seems to show that that's where she expects (wants?) them to go. Will the parking cops also have the power to rule about the amount of space taken up by the inhabitants if their gear spills out past the boundaries of the cabana?

Agree with Zemo and others. Why police, parking meters? What are we allowing these so-called "experts" to set up new beach rules for us? We used to be satisfied with an umbrella taking up a small space for our families while other families did the same. Now we're giving up our little space to allow for the selfish "cabana"-ites to take over as much space as possible. Why?

No issues in S.A. People put up tents & all sorts of shelters. Population is obviously less but we also have plenty of beaches to swim at.

Once we keep making excuses for these cabanas, etc., next thing we'll have mini-houses lining the beaches permanently as they have overseas.

I think if you find an abandoned cabana, either take it or use it! Clearly someone no longer wants the cabana as they have left it, abandoned on the beach. And if that person tries to claim it's theirs, say "prove it". 🤣🤣

Of course there is nothing wrong with having a cabana.
What is wrong is leaving your cabana there when you are not there. virtually claiming that spot as yours. That's not on. It serves them right if when they get there someone has removed it or stolen it.
