This Aussie café's shocking charge puts shop in hot spot

The simple pleasure of a warm muffin with your coffee is a small luxury many of us enjoy, especially on a cool winter morning.

For one unsuspecting café-goer, this indulgence came with an unexpected cost that sparked a heated debate online.

The incident unfolded when a young man visited a local Melbourne café to satisfy his sweet tooth.

'We agreed that the guilty pleasure of the white chocolate muffin would be worth it,' he wrote on social media, recounting the experience.

'I was asked if I would like it heated. It was a cold Melbourne morning, so sure, why not?'

Upon receiving the bill, the man saw that the $7 muffin had an additional $1 charge for a 'heat standard' fee.

The fee was not mentioned upon offering the service, leaving the customer disappointed by the lack of transparency.

The man's frustration was evident as he took to social media to air his grievances.

While he understood the financial pressures cafés face, customers should be informed about extra charges.

His post quickly garnered over 1,000 reactions and 850 comments before getting deleted, with many sympathisers expressing their disbelief.

'I can't believe they charged you $1 to heat a muffin,' one commenter wrote.

'For $7, it must have been the best muffin ever—I would never pay more than $5, and even then, it would have to be loaded,' another said.

'I would go red there and then. I would be furious,' a third said.

The consensus was clear: a heads-up on extra charges is expected and appreciated.

The conversation also touched on consumer rights. Some advised the man to report the incident to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), emphasising that businesses should disclose any additional fees upfront.

As for the café in question, they have yet to respond to the incident publicly.

The customer learned his lesson the hard way, vowed to scrutinise his receipts closely in the future, and encouraged others to do the same.

In a world where the cost of living is ever-increasing, this incident reminds everyone to keep a keen eye on our receipts.

It's easy to overlook the small print or dismiss the quick service interactions, but as this man's experience shows, it's worth paying attention to avoid any unwelcome surprises.

How old is this article??? The cafe owners responded last week admitting it was a human error made by a trainee. The customer has been offered a refund and a free muffin.

Why do people always take to social media when something like this happens. If it were me I would take it up with the cafe owner as to why they charge $1 to heat the muffin? Anyone can deal with this without having to share it on social media. It's called communication!
Totally agree, they do it for the attention I'm sure
