General Discussion Thread 20.10.2025

Hey there, members! ☀️ G'day! How are we feeling today? Energised? Sleepy? Somewhere in between? No judgment here, I’m right there with you.

I started my day with a small agenda: finally trimming my nails! I was about to do it last night, but I suddenly remembered what my uncles used to say: never trim your nails after dark, or you’ll invite bad luck. I don’t even think I’m superstitious, but somehow her voice just stuck in my head. Isn’t it funny how those little family sayings sneak into your grown-up routines, eh?

It got me thinking: we all have those quirky 'rules' or beliefs we’ve carried since childhood—the ones that might not make sense but still shape our habits. So here’s my question for you: what’s a superstition, old belief, or family quirk that’s still a part of your life today—even if you don’t totally believe in it? I’d love to read them below!

I always put my left sock and shoe on first to the extend that if I do the right foot first I pull it off and start again.

Funny I don't believe in superstitions but I grew up being told to beware of the following and strangely find myself still avoiding them 😅

Walking under a ladder
Im guessing it started to actually protect you from falling objects or knocking someone of a ladder

Avoid black cats walking in front on you.
Im guessing its because its black and you might not see it and trip

Don't put shoes on the table

Definitely a hygiene thing, who would be shoes on the table anyway.

Hubby is Greek and not sure if this is a custom or superstition, but before a couple get married the parents invite women to the couples home for what they call The bedding. They make the bed with beautiful linen then all the guest throws money on the bed then they throw two small children on the bed ,a boy and a girl. Which ever one lands first that is what their first child will be.

Strangely the ones I've gone to the couples first child was the same sex as the one who landed first on the bed.

Never put shoes on the bed or table.
Never put up a new calendar until the 1st January.
Never put an umbrella up inside.

Cover all mirrors in house at time of big tradigety

A BIRD INTHE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH

If you give someone a wallet or purse you had to put a silver coin in it so the recipient would never go without.

its 100% true in real life, believe me!

You always hear of three deaths.

So if there are four of you on a desert island and two die, BE very wary of the other person. 🤔

If you drop a knife don`t pick it up yourself or you will have a fight with somebody.
Don`t bring wattle into the home or there will be a death.
If you spill salt throw a pinch of the salt over the left shoulder to keep the devil away.
If you spill sugar, stick your finger in it, taste it and make a wish because it will come true.
A bride wearing pearls means tears.
If you have an itch on your left palm you will loose money and on the right you will receive money.
New shoes on the table bad luck.
Brake a mirror 7 yrs bad luck.

There are more, must be the Irish in me, but I do not mess around with them!
