Elite golf club ejects former political figure over controversial conduct

Golf clubs have long been bastions of exclusivity and tradition, where membership is as much about social standing as it is about the love of the game.

But what happens when the rules of the club are bent, and the sanctity of membership is called into question?

This is the tale of how the former Victorian Premier was ousted from one of Victoria's most prestigious golf clubs. It's a story that might just have you questioning the unwritten rules of club etiquette.

Dan Andrews, a name synonymous with the stringent lockdowns of Melbourne during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been making headlines again, but this time on the fairways rather than the political stage.

The Herald Sun first broke the news that Andrews had been surreptitiously ushered into the elite Moonah Links Golf Resort on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, thanks to the assistance of billionaire friend Max Beck.

Beck, a club Foundation Member, reportedly facilitated Andrews' entry by swapping his wife's name for that of the former Premier on a membership.

At first glance, this clever maneuver didn't seem to break any of the club's rules.

However, other members' reactions were swift and severe. The backlash was described as 'frothing and feverish,' leading the club to publicly state that Andrews was not a member despite the earlier reports.

The Moonah Links Golf Resort addressed the controversy head-on with a social media post, emphasising their commitment to providing a world-class golfing experience and distancing themselves from the political furore surrounding Andrews' membership status.

'Moonah Links Golf Resort wishes to address recent public speculation regarding former Premier Daniel Andrews,' the page wrote.

'We can confirm that Mr Daniel Andrews is not a member of Moonah Links Golf Resort.'

'Moonah Links continues to focus on providing a world-class golfing experience and supporting events that promote sport, tourism and community development.'

This isn't the first time Andrews and Beck have been caught in the middle of a golf club membership controversy.

Andrews had previously been discouraged from applying for membership at several other elite courses around the Morning Peninsula, with members expressing strong opposition to his potential inclusion.

The controversy seems to stem from Andrews' role during the pandemic. His policies included strict restrictions on golf in Victoria, leaving many golf enthusiasts feeling sidelined.

For our readers over 60, many of whom are avid golfers and club members, this story might resonate on a personal level.

It reminds us that club memberships are often about more than just the game; they're about the community, the values, and the standards that members collectively uphold.

Golf etiquette is first and foremost. No way do you get accepted until you have gone through the whole process of becoming a member.. Even this horrible man has to abide by the rules. Just the same as Victorians had to abide by his stupid covid rules. GOODY, they came back to bite him.

on the arse , now he knows what most Victorians 🤔 think of him.

Sorry, but I’m not a fan of politicians but I thing this whole thing is stupid and unfair. we had a one in a hundred year pandemic, no instruction book supplied. People were dying in droves overseas, NSW were doing a bad job at stopping the virus coming into Australia. We had an absent Prime Minister who didn’t give didly squat as long as he could go to his rugby games and Victoria has a team of people who did what they thought was the right thing to try and protect us. In hindsight, some measures may have been a bit of overkill. But it did save many lives, people have short memories. Time to let it go now and move on

Couldn’t agree more,Collette. He was dealt a bum hand and did the best he could with no support and no idea what was the best idea. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but people were dying! Andrew’s was damned no matter what he did. I feel terribly sorry for this man and his family.

Whereis your proof that it actually saved many lives?
Victoria had nearly as many deaths as NSW.
WA had less deaths pre capita by shutting down entry to the state but not shutting down peoples lives..

Like I said - short memories. Look at the state run nursing homes compared to the federal run homes, way less deaths in state run.

Some decisions that you make in life can come back and bite you in the bum. One of Dan's rules during all his covid lockdowns - was NO golf allowed. Golf clubs are now taking their revenge for that decision of his. If you didn't live in Melbourne/Victoria during Dictator Dan's lockdowns then you won't really understand what we all went through. Hope all gove clubs dont allow him to be a member.

A recidivist liar when questioned on his policy's... or, "I can't recall...."! From running over a teenage cyclist to wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on the Commonwealth Games debacle, amongst MANY other lies, he deserves all the contempt he has brought upon himself. In his very own words, any statements of reply from Andrews'....."IS NOT WORTH THE PAPER IT IS WRITTEN ON"!

Membership of sporting clubs certainly should NOT be based on political persuasion. Most of these “elite” clubs, especially golf clubs, are little more than a sanctum for privileged, small minded and cantankerous men who cannot move into the present. Just as well Dan Andrew’s isn’t a woman, it could have led to civil war.

Not at the least interested in the policies of any golf club membership requirements, But my understanding is that they also include women memberships...? Are they also "small minded, privileged and cantankerous", as well...?? Just asking.

I could not care less about GOLF CLUBS or their elitist membership rules. So you`ve made it if you become a member, I don`t think so, what a stupid thing to do, hit a little ball around a large green and try to get into a small hole. Surely they have something better to do like tennis, using a tennis racket hitting a tennis ball over a netted fence to another player, waiting on the other side of the netted fence, who then hits is back for hours. Or what about football, 2 teams either side, kicking a ball around on an oval trying to get the ball into a netted goal area, or over a post, in the meantime the players become savage animals, trying to damage their apponnents as much as possible. Seriously, and as far as Dan Andrews goes, everybody was odds when it came to COVID there were so many different opinions and recommendations regarding how it should be managed it was a real fiasco.

Personally. I wouldn't want a membership to their snobby elitist golf club.
What's so great about golf that makes these people think they are so much better than anyone else. They're just hitting little white balls around the countryside, whoopy doo!
Exactly!

I am totally sick the elitist attitude of some of these wanker filled dumps.

For @DLHM and my anniversary, I considered taking her to the South of Perth Yacht Club for a celebratory dinner. Firstly, you have to be a member to dine there, and secondly, an associate membership costs $319 per annum, up to $3186 for an ORDINARY member aged over 26 years of age.

The food is probably overpriced crap with a plate of chips costing around $18!

Understandably, we went elsewhere.
