ANZ Bank's latest decision has Aussies asking: What happened to simple signs?

When it comes to something as simple as finding out a bank's opening hours, you'd expect the information to be easy to access, right?

But one major bank's latest decision has sparked a wave of frustration online, with many questioning whether technology has made things unnecessarily complicated.

What started as a minor inconvenience has now turned into a full-blown debate, as Aussies take to social media to voice their concerns.

A simple sign displaying a bank's opening hours should be just that—simple.

However, ANZ Bank’s decision to use a QR code on a branch sign to share this information has sparked outrage among customers.

A frustrated passer-by snapped a picture and posted it on social media, criticising the bank for making something straightforward unnecessarily difficult.

‘Whatever happened to having a simple sign detailing opening hours? Now I have to scan a QR code and look up the branch on the website,’ they said.

Many Australians echoed this sentiment, slamming the bank for overcomplicating an otherwise basic task.

‘It just irks me how uncaring to the older demographic the big banks are,’ one person commented.

‘Great for elderly folk, you know the ones that actually go inside banks the most,’ another added.

Despite the criticism, ANZ defended its decision, claiming the QR code would provide customers with the most up-to-date information about the branch's opening times.

'ANZ introduced QR codes so customers can access the most up-to-date information about our trading hours,’ a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

The bank explained that it occasionally updated branch hours and wanted to ensure the public had access to the latest details.

'From time to time we may change our branch opening hours, as we wish to ensure our staff can be available when they're needed most,’ ANZ explained.

‘We understand the importance of accessibility and our branch staff are here to help all members of our community to access the services they need,’ they added.

Nevertheless, many Aussies still preferred the simplicity of traditional communication.

‘Technology has made things so unnecessarily complicated. Just give me a sign,’ one person commented.

The debate continues as ANZ tries to balance modern technology with the desire for straightforward service.

In a previous story, we highlighted the growing frustration over technical issues affecting major banks in Australia.

Now, thousands of customers are once again facing disruptions, leaving them locked out of their accounts.

Most banks are no longer an actual bank. Even if you don't bank there but want to pay a bill there commonwealth bank for example don't let you deposit more than $500. So if your bill us more you can't even pay it in 2 transactions as it has to be done through the ATM and you need to use your mobile number and once you have used it, won't allow you to use it again. And not allowed to deposit through the tellers at least not the branch I was at.
the other day I wanted to deposit money into my daughter's account, police and nurses bank and goodness they are a bank that is a bank. Very refreshing in today's world though not many branches here in Perth.

My bank's local branch became an "advice and loans" only, but at least had an ATM. Now they have closed the branch citing "members now use online banking and ATM's for their needs" and have moved 7kms away to an area which is almost impossible for the elderly to access via public transport. AND THEY TOOK THE ATM!!

My main bank is P&N. I’ve been with them about 15+ years and have never had a problem with them.
So far, so good… 🤞🏻

Our local branch of the Commonwealth in Kilmore is the most happy and helpful bank branch we have ever had. The staff cannot do enough to help you with your queries, they saved us from a major scam - I am in my 80's and this is my 3rd effort to find someone who cares - found at last - well done to ALL the staff in Kilmore, you have made our life easier.

A rare find. Well done! 👍🏻

When their staff will be available HA remember back in the 70's there used to at least 6 to 10 staff at a counter now if I go to either of my banks there is usually just ONE teller and a line of customers

A QR code to display opening hours is just….silly….It takes longer to get out your phone, open the app, capture the code and tap the link……than it does to just look at it……and people who would want to know that is mostly the older generation who might not be familiar with phone technology, and everyone else using online banking all the time so wouldn’t need to know opening hours. I’ve been to a couple of restaurants recently that use QR codes to order and to pay….the only time you see a person is when they bring your food….but one place actually had a little mobile robot that brought your food and some drinks to your table, you took your food and then it went away again…….I couldn’t get over it and it took a long time to stop giggling (I didn’t want to laugh out loud you see)……I was glad my kids were there to do the honours……it would have taken me much longer to navigate 😂😂

Why change something that works? Not everyone can use a mobile phone to access a QR code. Doesn't sound like they'll have as many customers if this is going to happen. Maybe that's what they want, more online customers instead. Then they wouldn't need as many workers.

"Elderly customers can't cope"🙄 They've always got to be mentioned to make a point. Every generation has elderly customers which must mean nothing should ever be changed to digital as nobody will cope with it. 🙄

And sorry to tell everyone but QR codes will be replacing barcodes by 2027.👍

ANZ stated they want to ensure they has staff when it is most needed. How about having staff at all times. Many a time there is only 2-4 staff for a bank full of customers and very little room to sit and wait your turn.
All banks care about is cutting costs and maximizing profit. They don't give a rats' arse about their customers. I started my banking career in 1974 when banks were a service industry. Over 26 years I watched as it changed, and they morphed, gobbling up their competitors and just becoming huge profit making businesses. The big four own all the smaller Banks except Bendigo Bank. Just one example is BankSA, Bank of Melbourne, St. George Bank and Rams Home Loans (Now defunct) are all owned by Westpac. Like most industries, there is very little competition anymore.
