Thousands of customers locked out of their banking accounts: 'How are they down so often?'

In an age where digital banking has become the norm, it is convenient to manage finances at our fingertips.

However, a recent event reminded Australians of their dependency on technology.

Thousands of Commonwealth Bank customers found themselves locked out of their accounts on Tuesday afternoon.

The significant disruption was reported 3,500 times on the website maintenance site DownDetector.

The technical issue happened at around 3:30 pm AEST and left many customers frustrated.

One customer who visited a Commonwealth Bank branch during the downtime took to social media to express their dismay.

'CommBank is having issues nationwide for those with the bank trying to access the app,' the customer posted.

The sentiment was echoed by another disgruntled user.

'How is Commonwealth Bank down so often?' they asked online.

'I should see an extra $5,000 every time they inconvenience me like this.'

The bank swiftly acknowledged the issue and confirmed that customers were experiencing difficulties with NetBank services and the CommBank app.

In a digital era where banking apps have become an essential tool, these disruptions could affect tasks such as paying bills and shopping for essentials.

Commonwealth Bank services resumed by 6:30 pm AEST.

In a statement, Commonwealth Bank reassured their customers that a technical glitch caused the issue.

However, they have launched further investigations to prevent future downtime and to protect customers from cyber-attacks.

'CommBank app and NetBank services have been fully restored,' the CBA announced in an update.

'All other services are available. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for your patience.'

Other services such as ATMs and online and in-person payments—including tap and pay—were unaffected by the downtime.

This incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of having contingency plans whenever digital banking services falter.

It should also be a call to action for financial institutions to keep robust systems in place to protect their customers during outages.

It's essential to keep a record of account details and to have alternative payment methods available for emergencies.

Trust me, the Comm bank does not give a rats backside about it's customers, I have been waiting over a year and after phoning and sending many emails and bank app messages for reply over our account being hacked 5 times now in 4 years.....I look at changing but really, is it going help....I don't know.
Did you try going to the Bank in person , it worked for me .

my bank was down as well
i drove to 5 banks on tuesday morning and 4 of them were out of order
the fifth bank i found was after doing about 40 kilometers and the bank teller machine i found was a independant bank which charged me a $3 fee
As i drive a v8 i think it cost me about $10 on fuel plus $3BANK fee charges
I think the bank should be liable for the cost incurred for not having their teller machines available
IF AUSTRALIA EVER GOES CASHLESS THEN A LARGE FINE SHOULD BE PAID IF U CANNOT ACCESS YOUR ACCOUNT PLUS COSTS

Wow people have short memories, remember the queues at the bank in the old days that very often snaked out the door on a Thursday or Friday. The groans and whinging were so bad. People have become so impatient over the years. People want the old days back with cash and banks but they forget how inconvenient it could be back then as well. It is what it is take the bad with the good.

I agree with you @Aussiecris. 👍🏻Yes, the “good old days” had their problems too. It seems with time, some of the reality fades.

I remember clearly the frustration of every second Friday (pay day), waiting in the queue at the bank to deposit some of my cash (pay packet) into my cheque account. Didn’t earn enough to have a savings account as well. 1971 -1973.

That was then. But this is 2025. I appreciate the time I’m in now and adjust as needed. It’s ok to reminisce from time to time, but living in the past is futile.

We were affected by this lates of many outages from Combank. We couldn't pay our mortgage or go shopping. Why is this happening to this bank and not others? My wife is thinking of goinig back to our old bank, they seem more reliable.

Sounds like your wife could very well be right. I’d rather be with a bank that’s more reliable.

Yes, I was locked out. So, I immediately Googled "Commonwealth Bank glitch today" and was relieved to see that there was a glitch.
Appears like your hopes came true ... your longed-for "glitch" happened, right up there with your expectarions. How would it be if you hoped a "glitch" would never occur -- would you be unhappy?

Not my hopes. My bank app wouldn't open so I Googled to see if there was an issue. Sure as eggs, there was. So it wasn't just me.

Ah, the cashless society ...I wonder if the person who dreamed up that phrase really knew what it would mean in these days when everything depends on computers?

Some companies if national are connected to one huge computer system. If one state goes down it affects the whole of Aust. I have experienced that at a company I worked for on a few occasions. It was happening in the 1990s. It may have been happening before that.
