'I can't get that out of my head': This bride-to-be's wedding song choice is uniquely Aussie!

Weddings are a time of joy, celebration, and a showcase of their personalities and preferences, right down to the very last detail.

One such detail that often holds significant emotional weight is the wedding song—a melody that will forever remind a couple of the moment they took those life-changing steps down the aisle.

But what happens when the perfect song comes with a uniquely Australian twist?

For Aussie bride-to-be Sarah Durante, this conundrum became all too real.

Sarah, a bride who recently relocated to the United States, had her heart set on a song that she felt was the embodiment of her journey and love story.

The song in question was 'Feels Like Home', which was popularised by Bonnie Raitt in the 1990s.

While the song had many renditions, it's Chantal Kreviazuk's 1999 rendition that resonated with Sarah the most.

However, Sarah noticed one detail that only Aussies might understand.

The 1999 rendition of the song had a strong association with a famous Qantas advertisement.

The Qantas ad, known for its heartwarming portrayal of family reunions and the emotional return to Australian soil, left an indelible mark among Aussies.

For many Australians who have lived or travelled overseas, the song could evoke images of the iconic flying kangaroo and the airline's message of homecoming.

Sarah, aware of this association, took to social media to voice her concerns.

'I can't get that out of my head,' she admitted as she questioned if it was okay to choose the song for her wedding.

She received many comments from Aussies online about her predicament.

Several Aussies affirmed Sarah that 'I Still Call Australia Home' was the true Qantas anthem, which left 'Feels Like Home' free from any associations.

Others associated the song with different forms of media, including the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or TV shows like Dawson's Creek.

These comments showed how a song could carry a myriad of emotions and memories, depending on the individual's experiences.

Despite the mixed feedback, the prevailing sentiment was one of encouragement.

'Perfect song! It has a beautiful meaning,' one praised.

'If it means something to you and your partner, then do it.'

This story highlights a concern that many couples could face when planning their wedding: the challenge of selecting a song that is meaningful and free from unintended associations.

For those who may be helping their children or grandchildren plan a wedding, this tale should be a reminder to consider the cultural context of song choices.

It is also a testament to the power of music to connect people to their homeland and their memories.

As Sarah herself concluded, the song's connection to her Australian roots and the new life she's building overseas should make it all the more special.
Key Takeaways

  • An Australian bride-to-be hesitated to use 'Feels Like Home' as her wedding aisle song due to its association with Qantas adverts.
  • Sarah Durante shared her dilemma online, where she explained the emotional conflict as an Australian living in the United States.
  • Commenters on the post had varying associations with the song, with some not connecting it to the airline at all.
  • Most of the responses encouraged Sarah to use the song since it held personal significance with her and her partner.

My husband and I married in 1999. It is a second marriage for us both. We chose Aerosmith's "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" from the movie Armageddon. Not because we believed our life together would be a meteoric catastrophe, but because the lyrics are purely about love and togetherness for all time. Still my favorite song to this day, and is my phone ringtone too 🥰 🥰🥰

It's a beautiful song for a couples wedding.
Its saying that one of them is the other ones home. How their life was dark and broken before but now it's fixed.

Something in your eyes
Makes me wanna lose myself
Makes me wanna lose myself
In your arms
There's something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life
If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've been so alone
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you've done
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where
I come from
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong
A window breaks down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright 'cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see through the dark there is light
If you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
If you knew how happy you are making me
I've never thought that I'd love anyone so much
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where

When my husband and I married in 1998, we used the soundtrack from "Ice Castles". I had always said the song, "Looking Through the Eyes of Love" would be a great wedding song.
It was second weddings for both of us, and my son walked me to the Garden Arch and gave me away, quite willingly.

That’s probably one of their best songs great track 👍

l stayed overnight with my sister-laws family in Leeds and as her brother was known for always being late for everything she kept singing ''Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling'' from ''High Noon''Tex Ritter.
He was late as usual his excuse was picking someone up on his motor bike so lucky we only got married in a registry office .So our song was picked by someone else and my hubby was never the musical type anyway we were complete opposites

My youngest daughter is getting married next week and this is going to be her wedding song. She asked me what I thought of it and initially said I didn`t like, but after reading the lyrics decided it is very beautiful!

My wedding song was "It had to be you" both my husband and I had been married before we met and I was so skeptical about another marriage, but after 5 yrears of deciding, we have now been together for 35 yrs. Gone were all the fairy tail endings both with eyes wide open. The lyrics: sorry it is long

Why do I do just as you say
Why must I just give you your way
Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget
It must have been that something lovers call fate
Kept me saying I have to wait
I saw them all, just couldn't fall, 'til we met
It had to be you
It had to be you
I wandered around, and I finally found
The somebody who
Could make me be true
And could make me be blue
And even be glad
Just to be sad - thinking of you
Some others I've seen
Might never be mean
Might never be cross, or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you.

My hubby and I danced to Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific. That's how we met, eyes meeting in a crowded room and he asked me to dance. Awww ... it was lovely.

On another topic, my sister has a chosen song to play when her coffin goes through the curtain at the crematorium. Chim Chimney from Mary Poppins is what whey wants. When I say my final goodbye, I want Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (Monty Python version) to be played at my gathering.
We both like the idea of some of our ashes going up in fireworks. Shame they are illegal in my neck of the woods.
No...I don't come from a warped family, we just don't like the last memory to be of tears. Rolling of the eyes will be fine.

I had that song played at my husband’s funeral in 2013. People thought it was a bit odd, but I really like the song and it meant something to me in my own way. I’m pleased I had it played.

You sound like you are getting things sorted the way you choose. I like that idea, I have started to plan as well and organise the kind of funeral I want and where I want to go. At first I thought that it was a bit macabre, then I thought that this probably one of the most important moments. I do want my family to know how much I loved them and how they are (were) my greatest achievments. Still working on it. BRAVO to you!
