Supermarket giant starts the year right by re-introducing Australia Day promos

The new year marked new beginnings for a lot of us.

Some corporations also saw it as a clean slate to earn customers' trust.

After a year of controversy, a supermarket giant is making a patriotic comeback with in-store Australia Day promotions.

This year, Woolworths has embraced the spirit of Australia Day with open arms.

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that 'Perfect for Australia Day' items are now available for sale online.

The 'Perfect for Australia Day' deals should also be available in stores starting next week.

These sections should feature a variety of Australian food favourites often synonymous with Australia Day and its accompanying celebrations.

Yet, the offerings do not stop with food.

Woolworths-owned BIG W will also be selling products perfect for extended weekend gatherings.

From beach essentials to BBQ must-haves, Woolworths wanted to assure customers that they have everything they need to celebrate Australia Day.

Last year, Woolworths' decision to pull Australia Day items out from its shelves led to a public outcry.

This outcry even led to a call from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to boycott the retailer.

In return, Woolworths defended itself and clarified that it was not trying to 'cancel' the national holiday but responded to 'steeply declining sales'.

The supermarket giant's previous move sparked a broader discussion about what 26 January meant to Australians.

Labour Minister Annika Wells stated that retailers have the right to stock their shelves with items they believe customers will purchase.

'People should choose to spend the day however they want,' Minister Wells also stated.

Consumer behaviour expert Professor Gary Mortimer from QUT Business School also shared his sentiments about the supermarket's decision.

'The proportion of customers that indicated that they have a desire to have Australia Day products available in store so they can celebrate the day would have been more important than simply one politician,' Professor Mortimer said.

While competitors like Kmart and ALDI have shied away from Australia Day promotions in recent years, Coles stated it will continue to stock merchandise catering to the diverse ways Australians choose to celebrate Australia Day.

Woolworths' renewed approach this year could be about striking a balance.

By offering a more extensive range of Australia Day deals while also featuring flags representing Australian diversity, the retailer wanted to show that it was listening to its customers from last year's debacle.

As Aussies gear up for the festivities, Woolworths is keen to win back customers who strayed away after last year's controversy.

With its renewed focus on Australia Day promotions, the supermarket is positioning itself as a destination for all your celebratory needs.

So, as you plan your Australia Day weekend, Woolworths might have what you need to make the day special.

Woolworths stance on Australia Day last year was a disgrace and people did boycott their stores because of their very un Australian stance. It's good Woolworths finally saw some sense and reacted to customers' anger and annoyance.

I think this will take a long time to 'go away'Woolies are definitely not an all Aussie company and its obvious where their loyalties lay they have lost me..I have a memory, they should have stuck to being a retailer and grocery shop and stay out of politics just keep making money to send overseas to the real boss

they didn't see the sense...they saw empty cash registers and reacted in a phoney response and said "it was all a misunderstanding" money talks and so do customers

Just a question. Who do you see as the ‘real boss overseas’?

Woolies did not stock australia day products last year because they expected the voice referendum to get in. They donated a large sum to the yes side. And by the time the yes vote lost it was too late to order australia day products . This info came from a woolies manager.

The 'Perfect for Australia Day' deals should also be available in stores starting next week.

Next week? A mere 20 days before Australia Day?

But you commercial corksuckers have been selling items for a fictitious "event" occurring on 20 April.

F**king hot cross buns!

Get your priorities right, WOOLWORTHS!

Woolies is a public company you can buy shares and be a part owner

And so they bloody well should do.....they rely on Australians to buy their goods in order to make huge profits for themselves and their shareholders....so they should support their customers back on the most significant day for Australians....lets hope that the range of goods on offer is wide and varying. They have a long way to go yet in getting any respect for themselves with a lot of Aussies. Support and loyalty works both ways Woolworths, don't ever forget it.

Thank you! I imagined you may have been referring to South African ownership of Woolworths in your initial post. 👍
Yes I was asking, subtly, if the original person was referring to South Africa - I know Woolworths are wholly owned here and are not part of the South African group.
