Here’s how this clever Woolworths shopper saved a whopping $1,100 for the holiday season

As the festive season approaches, many Australian households are bracing themselves for the financial impact of the holidays.

According to recent statistics, the average Aussie family is expected to spend a staggering $1,864 on Christmas festivities this year.

However, one savvy Woolworths shopper has found a way to significantly cut down on her holiday expenses, saving an impressive $1,180 in the process.

Jessykah Burnage, a mother of three from Adelaide, has discovered a simple yet effective method to save hundreds of dollars on Christmas presents and groceries for her family.

Her secret? The 'Bank for Christmas' option that is being offered by Woolworths' Everyday Rewards loyalty program.

'I did have a little bit leftover from last year—maybe $200. But, for the whole year, I’ve been banking for Christmas,' Jessykah shared.

'I feel like it’s more bang for buck to leave it and to get hundreds of dollars off one shop rather than $10 here and there.'

The 'Bank for Christmas' option allows Everyday Rewards members to save up their reward dollars throughout the year, which can then be used during the holiday season. This clever strategy has allowed Jessykah to accumulate a substantial amount of savings, which she plans to use to buy Christmas presents and groceries.

The need for such a savings strategy arose when Jessykah and her husband's mortgage repayments skyrocketed.

'Our fixed rate, which was at 2 per cent, has just finished up and has skyrocketed,' the mum shared.

'So, it’s been a bit of a slap in the face, especially because my daughter is still 16 months [old] so I’m still having time off work to help raise her.'

With the increase in living costs and the transition from a two-income household to a single-income one due to her young daughter, Jessykah found herself needing to be more frugal.

The Everyday Rewards loyalty scheme is a popular choice among Australians, as recent data revealed that more than four in five Aussies are now part of a supermarket rewards program. Approximately 58 per cent of these members use their points to save money on groceries.

The program allows customers to earn points when shopping at Woolworths and its partner stores, including BIG W, BWS, and Ampol. Members can also get $10 off each time they collect 2,000 Everyday Rewards points or convert them into 1,000 Qantas Points.

Jessykah's strategy to maximise her Everyday Rewards points involved regularly checking the app for offers and shopping with partner retailers such as MyDeal, Healthylife and BIG W.

She also joined Everyday Extra, which offers additional points on every shop and a 10 per cent discount on monthly shopping.

'I religiously checked the app to boost all the offers. You can get little offers like 100 points if you buy wraps or [certain items]. So, even if I didn’t fully need it, if it was something non-perishable [that I would use], I would buy that,' Jessykah explained.

Her savings strategy has paid off, allowing her to plan for a special Christmas gift for her family—a new PS5.

'My kids and husband have been wanting one for a few years now, but I just haven’t been able to budget it. So, having the points to be able to buy not only a PS5 but also a game or two is amazing,' she said.

Understanding Supermarket Loyalty Programs

Supermarket loyalty programs like Woolworths' Everyday Rewards and Coles' Flybuys are designed to reward regular customers with points that can be redeemed for discounts, products, or travel rewards. These programs are free to join and can offer significant savings for those who shop regularly at these supermarkets.

The key to maximising the benefits of these programs is understanding how they work. Both Everyday Rewards and Flybuys allow customers to earn points for every dollar spent at the supermarket and partner stores. These points can then be redeemed for discounts on future purchases or converted into airline points.

However, some loyalty programs offer additional benefits for members who opt into certain features.

By strategically using these loyalty programs, customers can save a significant amount of money on their regular shopping. This can be particularly beneficial during the holiday season when expenses tend to be higher.

All I can say is this lady must be spending big dollars during the year to accumulate over $1000 in rewards dollars. Well done to her.
With the cost of everything, I don’t find it unbelievable. I have a fair amount of reward dollars and I don’t even shop at the big supermarkets very often.

Yeah like the Everyday Rewards and Rewards + Makes sense to take advantage of it when they keep the prices high. I know it's factored into the price but if you are going to buy the stuff anyway might as well get some benefit. I can add up quickly if you buy products that have large bonus points. Great for larger families. I look for things I can buy at BigW instead of Woolies so I get the most out of my 10% of at both each month

I don't believe rewards cards are giving anyone anything they haven't paid for.
The people who don't have a rewards card are just not getting back a percentage of what they have spent.
Coffee sticks in Woolies, member price $3.75,non member $7.00. What a rip off.
Yes, I do have a rewards card, so I get some refund on overcharging.
