You won't believe where this chaos-causing horse took shelter—it might be your favourite store!

From bumper-to-bumper jams to nerve-wracking merges, navigating traffic is a feat in itself.

However, in the sea of brake lights and honking horns near exit 28 on the M1 motorway in Queensland, motorists and commuters were stopped when an unexpected guest decided to take a stroll—turning the chaos into a spectacle.

Surveyor Roland Mollison was among the motorists who found themselves in an unusual situation.

'Traffic had slowed down and about ten cars ahead, I just saw this horse's head flailing around… as I got closer there was a guy trying to control it. We were in the middle of a four-lane highway,' he recalled.

The scene was captured on dashcam footage by another commuter, Jacob Burns. The video showed Burns and other drivers attempting to catch the horse amidst the busy traffic.

While others ‘whizzed’ past, Mollison, in an effort to aid Burns, parked his car across two lanes and activated his vehicle's hazard lights.

Despite the chaos, some drivers were less than understanding.

'People were trying to get past us, like up on the side of the road, getting really irate... I’m amazed no one was hurt,' Mollison said.

Burns, demonstrating quick thinking and resourcefulness, fashioned a horse bridle out of a tie-down strap to gain control of the horse.

With the help of Mollison and others, they successfully caught the runaway animal.

But where do you take a horse in the middle of a busy motorway? The answer might surprise you.

The group, horse in tow, sought refuge in a nearby Bunnings car park.

The staff at Bunnings, always ready to lend a hand, provided a bucket full of water and a banana for the horse.

Meanwhile, one of the drivers went back to retrieve Burns' ute.

'[The horse] wasn't in great nick, he didn't have horseshoes on and had a few scars... but he was very gentle and nice. We all took selfies with him,' Mollison said.

The Logan City Council arrived with a horse trailer and took the horse to a nearby pound while they searched for the owner.

'They're going to impound him, find the owners and inspect the property, make sure it's been treated well,' Mollison said.

The council confirmed that the owner has now been notified.

'The owner advised Council that the agistment paddock from which the horse escaped is not suitable for it to be returned there and she is looking for a new location to stable the horse,' a spokesperson said.

The horse will remain in the council's care until further notice.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected situations life can throw at us. Not only can they happen on land traffic, but also in the air, too!
