You won't believe what's hiding in your pillows! See how this grandma's easy cleaning method exposes a disturbing secret

We all want to ensure our homes are as hygienic and clean as possible.

One grandmother, known affectionately as 'Everyone’s Grandmother' on social media, recently shared a helpful trick that many of us could benefit from, especially if giving our pillows some much-needed TLC is something we’ve overlooked.

The grandma teaches us exactly how to clean our pillows in a manner that will leave them looking as fresh and new as ever.

First, fill your tub (or an extra large bucket!) with the hottest water possible.

Then, it's time to make the secret cleaning mixture:
  • 1/4 cup of borax
  • 1/4 cup of bicarb soda
  • two cups of liquid laundry detergent
Stir until they’re all blended.

Now add your pillows to the water and submerge them fully. Leave them for at least 24 hours.

Once your pillows have soaked for long enough, wring out as much water as possible. Then, put them in the washing machine (without detergent) and the dryer with a few dryer balls (or tennis balls) for fluffiness.

You can watch the video below:

And there you have it, folks! Your pillows are now clean and sterile.

This cleaning trick has gone viral on social media and garnered over a million likes since it was posted.

'Thank you so much they’re awesome fluffy and smell so nice now,' one user wrote.

While another user said, 'Wow. I'm trying this with my white sheets.'

Meanwhile, we should also be aware of the optimal timeline for changing out pillows for new ones.

Consumer advocacy group TakeATumble suggests that pillows should be replaced after a maximum of two years because of the dirt, dust, and allergens they accumulate and retain in that time. For a more specific timeline, depending on the material of your pillows, you may refer to the infographic below:

Common signs indicating it is time for a pillow replacement are foul odour or unwashable yellow stains. There are also bodily changes to watch out for, such as experiencing neck or back pain, getting acne, or experiencing allergy symptoms.

If you don’t want to part with your pillows just yet, try the cleaning trick above–and don't forget that you should still be washing your pillowcases every two weeks.

I have a latex pillow. No way I could lift the weight and wring it out! As to drying in a non-existent dryer, forget it! I will live with my personal bugs!

I use to put mine in washing machine with the whitening bleach powder my grandmother use to steep them but in those days no washing machine only a mangle.. But now I have memory foam pillow with double covers

Can anyone tell me how to choose a good pillow? I have spent a fortune over the years and never really found one that I'm happy with. The latest advice I received is a child's pillow - low profile. Thoughts?

I buy Jaspa pillows from Kmart and they are better than the more expensive ones. They are $35 each and come in all variations, so easy to find the ones you need. Been using them for years. Praying they never stop making them!

Thank you Hel. I haven't tried Jaspa but will give it a try. Price is good. I have tried many expensive ones only to be disappointed. Cheers!

We have chiropractic memory foam pillows and they are not washable. I have thick quilted pillow protectors on them and wash the protectors regularly and air the pillows outside. I once washed some polyester pillows and they ended up lumpy and had to be thrown out. I really don't think the harsh treatment recommended in this article would be good for any type of pillow!

I put mine in the washing machine and they come our clean and fine but the ones I use are better than most even though they come from Kmart. :) I spent years looking for my ideal pillows and Jaspa are the ones I'm sticking to.

I don't understand why it would not be clean enough just putting it through a machine wash in the first instance and line drying in the sun. Just seems like a lot of extra work to me
They'd have to be decades old to be that filthy.
