The Two-ingredient Trick:

Sonja, from Queensland, had been using her pen when it suddenly leaked onto the carpet, leaving her in a state of despair. Thankfully, she remembered a handy carpet cleaning hack she had once seen online and quickly grabbed some materials to put the trick to good use.

Using a combination of methylated spirits and paper towels, Sonja soaked and blotted the stained area until the offending ink was gone for good. She then proceeded with some warm water and a hairdryer for good measure, ensuring that no lingering stains would appear once the carpet had dried.

The key to getting on top of the situation quickly was to keep it simple. Don’t overwet the area, and try to be gentle with the paper towels, as vigorous scrubbing can cause the stain to spread and embed further into the carpet, making it more difficult to remove.

If you ever find yourself in a situation similar to Sonja’s, members, don’t panic! With the right cleaning materials at hand, it’s surprisingly easy to get your carpets looking spick and span again in moments.

And Sonja’s solution isn’t just a one-trick pony either; in addition to being the tried and tested remedy for ink stains, the combination of methylated spirits and paper towels also works wonders on many other carpet stains, such as wine, coffee and even oil—granted, those may take some additional elbow grease to remove, but the effort is worth it in the end.

Here are some common household carpet stains and quick ways to clean them:

1. Tea or Coffee Stains

Any kind of liquid – not only your beloved black coffee! – can leave yellowish-brown spots. If you’re not careful, these stains can become permanent.

To tackle the problem quickly, blot the mess with a paper towel as soon as it happens. This is the best ‘window of opportunity’ to prevent the stain from taking hold.

If the damage has already been done, make a homemade solution of equal parts water and white vinegar and spray it on the stain. Sprinkle a generous helping of baking soda on top and leave it overnight. The following morning, all you need to do is rinse it up and the stain should be a thing of the past!

2. Blood Stains

Blood stains can occur if you suffer from an injury, or just by accident. Regardless of the cause, if not treated properly, stains caused by any kind of bodily fluid can be really difficult to get rid of.

Start off by filling a spray bottle with cold water and a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide – use this solution to spray the affected area. The stain should start to come away after a few rounds. Rinse the affected spot with cold water before blotting it dry with paper towels.

3. Melted Chocolate

Melted chocolate can present a unique challenge, as it’s incredibly sticky. But don’t worry: even the most stubborn chocolate stains are no match for the SDC’s cleaning tips!

First up, you need to harden the chocolate so that it’s easier to remove. Put some ice cubes on top of the stain until it turns hard. If the stain has already settled in, you can move straight to the remedy - a trusty water and dishwashing detergent solution.

In a spray bottle, carefully mix one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing concentrate with two cups of room temperature water.

Spray the area and let the mixture sit for a few moments before dabbing off with paper towels. You may need to repeat this step a few times before the stain is completely gone. Problem solved.

This may work for carpet ink stain but it works for clothes. Aeroguard insect spray, it takes off permanent ink from shirt pockets, graffiti from painted surfaces eg. kids bedroom walls etc.

Again i see a stain removal technique of vinegar and bicarb soda. I know that mixing an acid (vinegar) with a soda (bicarb soda) produces a lot of froth and bubbles BUT the one neutralises the other. So does it really work? If 'yes' then why? Is it because people who do this do not get the portions exactly right to neutralise the mix and one ingredient is doing the job. If this is correct then which ingredient is the one that is doing the job? Has anybody reading this used JUST vinegar or JUST soda?
