Writing Your Autobiography
Note from the Editor:
This article was kindly written for the SDC by member @Doctor Alan.
I have to admit that the writing of my autobiography is a ‘work in progress’ – but then, it really should be. In trying to bring together all the aspects of my life that appear to have some significance, I thought it might be a good idea to share some of my findings in achieving my goal. Before I start, though, there are several questions that might spring to mind.
What is an autobiography, and why is it important?
It’s essentially a chronology of your life. It’s not a memoir but a collection of memoirs. Nobody’s life is boring. The longer we live, the richer the tapestry of life becomes. It’s always interesting to read the autobiographies of famous (or infamous) people, but it can be really instructive to read that of an ‘ordinary’ person, and the best – most interesting – ones are those that tell the unvarnished truth. This is not always the case for celebrities, who tend to ‘sanitise’ their work.
Apart from the importance of leaving a record of your life for somebody else to read, I have found that it is quite cathartic – it makes one ‘feel better’! Whether you have grandchildren or not, it’s not just for extended families to peruse. Just leaving a written record makes a person feel their struggle through the narrow corridors of existence has been somewhat worthwhile. There is, of course, the possibility of publishing your autobiography, and I will cover this subject in a later section.
